I'll be on the lake in four hours! Headed North.
Vacation this week coming up.

Great photos of the Bucks Camp and love the shots of the castle, thank you.

I saw the dock had floated away, found it, and it didn't 15 minutes to tow it back and push it into place. Glad to help. Gil
If any problem is found with the dock at the Bowerbank Landing, notify one of the selectmen and we'll deal with it ASAP.
Gil, Everytime I drive down Bowerbank Road with my wife and see a turkey, I'll say "look at the turkey!" She looks directly at me, so, yes, the turkey population is growing as is my marriage counselor's wallet.
Gil: My Springer Spaniel flushed a Turkey hen and her chicks two weeks ago Saturday. That dog chased that turkey off down the road! The dog came back but it took a bit. Tim's cove Rd.
R.S.D.
That wasn't me that posted about the telephone pole but I saw a log almost as big! :-)
The dock at Bowerbank town landing is back in operation. I found it floating up the shore a ways and hauled it back to the landing.
Water has come up less than a half inch in the last 24 hours but the streams are full and more rain on the way. Ship Pond Stream is quite a sight as it roars into Buck's Cove. Worth a trip to see it.
Saw a mother turkey with a dozen or so chicks crossing the road by Mill Brook this afternoon. They were about the size of a small robin. Is Bowerbank really being taken over by turkeys? Gil
Gil,
I imaging it is a chunk of dock made from a round telephone pole probably 5' long.
No booth or phone attached...8-)
Gil 4:05 p.m. SUNKEN BOATS ??? Should I check on mine then.
5:21 p.m. Phone pole! ...phone booth?
The Bear's House Museum at Greeley's Landing, Sebec Lake will be open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm beginning July 2nd through the summer season.
Tim
Yes Bc it's actually starts at the power line that run from Packard's to Tim's cove. The best way probably is to secure you boat at Gibraltar and walk on the trail that turns into the far end of Tim's cove Rd. until you find the power lines, hike north on the power lines to Power pole CMP #136 and look for the trail head on the right marked in red. Total distance to caves is only one, or perhaps one and a half miles. Please if all hikers can be respectful on the private Rd. No litter or Dog poop! as stated in 2:09 p.m. comments.
R.S.D.
P.S. Is it worth it,? only you who visit can judge.
I just had a telephone pole wash ashore on my property.
It is ashame when people's actions ruin it for the rest. I do not blame the local folks for stopping the use of the trail if they can't "leave it cleaner than you found it" rule. (One of those kindergarten rules.., like sharing and wash your hands)
In addition to high water, sunken boats and floating docks, there is a lot of junk floating in the lake -sticks, lumber and some pretty good-sized logs. Boaters beware!
The dock at the Bowerbank town landing has floated up into the mouth of Mill Brook making it a little bit difficult to launch a boat of any size.
Both gates in dam are open again and the water is still coming up. Have pulled my dock in twice in 48 hours. No rain (yet) today but more on the way? Gil
Sorry there is no longer a trail to Ice Caves from Tims Cove Road. So many people for so long have used the old path as a personal dump area with trash and dog waste that the people living in the area that might have given permission for people to park ,no longer do so. I know this seems unreasonable to alot of you but just imagine coming home and finding trash and dog dodo on your property. Thinking you can just pull off the road and park is not a good idea as the side of the road is private property.
The lake is so high that a lot of the wharfs are under water. Please watch your boat wake for awhile so as not rack them. When going through the Narrows and close to shore slow down, Thanks steve
Is there a trail to the ICE CAVES from Tim's Cove Road?
bc
Fantastic photos of the Bucks Camp and Lake!,... Thanks for sharing! SH
Monday June 29, 2009 01:34 PM I need dirictions to those ice caves, can anywone help? Are they worth the trip. My camp is in sebec. Thanks A.G.
Go to Packard's Camps. Ask permission to park. Trail Head is just behind macgreggor camp. Takes 45 min to an hour to hike. Bring back ice for cocktails please.
-GW
A.G. I could help, but access could be a problem. Not many places to park or land a boat. You can come in at it from Packard"s (private) or the sand beach at "Greenwood" VERY private! Tim's cove Rd. No place to park W/O permission. You could walk in from Gibraltar, about 1 1/2 Miles +or - It's a nice hike should be ice still, I have found Ice in August!
If you are interested, I can direct you from that point.
R.S.D.
I think I may have heard the really reALLY LOUD boat today!
I love the Loud Boat!
I need dirictions to those ice caves, can anywone help? Are they worth the trip. My camp is in sebec. Thanks A.G.
Interesting that with the high water, the lake rising every day and rain forecast for the next several days the dam operators would close one gate this morning. Gil

"Salmon prefer cool water which is generally found from 25 to 50 feet and more below the surface during the mid-Summer. Therefore it requires you to place your lure or bait deeper in the water column to be successful. There are two principal ways to do this: use leadcore line or employ downriggers. Leadcore line sinks at varying depths depending on your boat speed. It comes on 100 yd. spools which have different colors every 30 feet to aid in determining the depth you are fishing. While this can be very effective, I prefer the use of downriggers. In a nutshell, clipping a line with the lure attached to a weighted rigger ball, then lowering it to the desired depth allows you to play a busting salmon on light tackle without the line drag found in the leadcore lines."
http://www.rideouts.com/salmon-fishing-articles.html
Salmon at three colors is better than sex.
I have never fished in my life... something I hope to learn!
What does "Salmon at 3 colors" mean?
I know... "sheltered life"
BC
I got my boat back out on the lake today. I found that the channel by packards the water has warmed up - 77 degrees! Top of the lake is 70 or so. The stream run off is very warm. Salmon at 3 colors. Bass were biting quite nicely. I had AT&T cell coverage at the south cove park beach. And I had 4 bars of coverage on AT&T at Brown Point by the hazard marker. We have a nesting pair of Loons up at PAckards. Water is hi but not too hi - so far . . .
it seems summah is here.

If you want to put some sunshine in your life just head over to Vermont for the day. Nice and sunny over there :)
Both the gates are wide opened at dam in the village. Thank you gate keepers. Keep up the good work of trying to keep lake at a stable level.
Bob:
I had similar thoughts, but when that thing cuts loose Wow! I would think about 15,000 lb. root ball snapping back! I could address it at a Board meeting scheduled this Sat. It should be attended to soon, I agree.
Also, just so you know, Tim's Cove issues this specific could be directed to http://www.timscove.org/ then click events, and you will see Community bulletin board for E-Mail communication will the Board of directors.
Thanks Bob.

Haven't been on the lake yet. I may or may not launch my boat today. It is 60 here and dry today - rain will move in later. THe water is hi. I still see a loon pair out by my dock. I will look where I think I saw the nest a week ago. Many branches down.
Good to be back.

Should we consider cutting the root ball off the large tree that fell a couple of weeks ago so that the roots can call back in the hole and do not endanger the road? It is a large hemlock?
I would be glad to help. I know of a logger who may want some of the tree (he cuts the posts for under camps and uses hemlock for durability..)because it is so large.
just a thought
Bob
Power is out at the lake. A tree is down on the road to the Greely's landing from Dover-Foxcroft.

On the north shore in Bowerbank we get 5.1, 5.2, 12.1, and 12.2. Once in a while Channel 5 drops out, which probably means we are right on the edge of the signal.
Cant get channel 2 or 7
I'm told digital signals are good for about 35mi. The Bangor stations are in the 40-45mi range.
Anyone else having better luck?
Pick up 7.1 & 7.2 only once in a while. Most of the time there is nothing.
How is TV reception now that the change over has occurred?
thx
This IS prime nesting time for the Loons, this would be a very bad time for mismanagement of the water level! But... Why would this year be any different?
This early, Loons could still attempt another brood.

Maybe the they should open the other gate for a few days at the village to drain it down . Also the wharfs are going to be in jeopardy if the winds come up. Come on gate keepers you can twick it, Thanks for trying to keep us from too high or too low water levels.
yes, the water she's a risin' hope the loon nests are o.k....supposed to get more rain in the next week, will there be the first '09 flood?
Well the DoverDozen (1/2 dozen) came an went last week. The weather was not the best we've had but thats the joy of days off. The fishing was ok alot of short salmon an only a couple lakers. The lake level is comming up and the water temp. was very brisk(had to work on the dock while we were there). The few of us who were able to gather this trip had a good time(can't remember a bad one)an looking toward the next gathering dates. Hope all the boys who couldn't make this trip will make the next one. Best of luck to you all an hope the fish bite hard an stay for a photo. Wet lures an tight lines PR-DoverDozen

RE: Dish TV - I've used it for two years now. We get the "full-boat" because we are here year-round. Trees would be a problem, but we're on the north shore. To get the best info, call Valley Sat, out of Patten. They actually have a human being that talks to you. I'm not selling Valley, but I called Dish directly and got nowhere for two or three days. Be careful of the "special deals".
Boat Parade - If it floats and everyone has a pfd you're in.
Love the pics of the moose!
I have a DISH network coming
it will always be only $15 month
no trees will be cut down - I expect it to fade away in a downpour
(I BETTER BE HAPPY - DONT BURST MY BUBBLE!)
Three issues with direct TV:
1.The welcome package is probably 2-3 months, then oyu will be pay $50,
2. If you live on the south side of the lake, you need to cut down trees because you need an open view of the southern sky. ANY foliage in the way will make the dish fail.
3. Any bad storm will impact the ability of the satalite and the dish to transmit.
I have had directTV and it was a good system but there are physical limitations you need to understand.
Dish Network uses the same system but the satalites are in a different orbit and were about 90 degrees to the east of DirectTV. Have the tech show you where the satilite(s) are... if he can not find his company's satalite , have them show you where the other company's satalite because it may mean not cutting down trees!
Show before you buy!

Digital vs dish TV
I found out that I will be getting a dish TV instead of new digital service because . . .
$200 install to 2 sets $15 month/no contract - local abc, cbs, nbc, fox,PBS, CW, and history channel weather channel, AMC, bloomberg, CMT, comedy central, discovery channel, msnbc, tbs, , etc. . .
it is a small package designed to lure folks away from antennae to digital and use dish instead - It seems to make sense to me as I still need to pay to install a digi antenna, etc, converter boxes and all would cost more and to get less channels and it may not always work as some folks are learning. Less hassle I feel.
It's called welcome pack + local $15 month
LOoking at Antenna for camp with Digital coming in.

can quiet boats join the parade too? or just big loud ones?
I know it's early, but don't forget Bowerbank days on 7-8 August. Big boat parade forms up in Newell Cove near the public landing in Bowerbank. More to come. bsbwrbk
Good report G.W.
Sebec Report; week 1
The water has just come up to near 60 degrees the past few days
It should warm faster now as the weather has been great this past week. Black Flys are leaving for now.
Salmon are biting at 1-3 colors. I got 2 nice 15" yesterday and a bigger one that got away as my treble hook broke!
A Loon pair is nesting up here at the landing. I think the nest is neat the runway end.
The water level is perfect now. Hats off to the dam people at the dam! If it says this way we will have loon chicks and can watch their parents protect them from the Eagles in july.
Yes,there are 2 Eagle chicks in the nest by the castle. I've only seen one adult so far.
I have not bass fished Sebec much yet. I think it has been too cold and the bass are still in prespawn from what I see. There are a few big ones up at Early's falls I hear. . . I go to a shallow lake tomorrow that should be in peak spawn for bass, south branch. Wish us luck!
Hi speed internet is nice when it is on and working. Ours has shut down from time to time all week. We are learning the bugs and how to recycle our setup. I bet you can check your email in the river in front of Packards.
The music in monson was good last night. All had fun.

RE: JP at 11:37, Well said - Summer Season's Greetings right back at ya! This lake (and web site for that matter) is a truly unique and special place. As a tiny-timer I can't wait to get back to our little corner of paradise on Ram Island Point. Looking forward to getting the whole family back together again for lobstahs at the lake on the 4th! Lucky too that I only need a car to get there when time permits. The rest have to hop on planes to join the fun. It's worth it... ~L
RE: Tuesday June 02, 2009 08:40 AM Hey GW . . .
iphone pix snapped answer-
DUH
I snapped the rainbow photo via web cam software - I captured the web cam image from Mike's view from my web cam viewer software on my phone at packards. Any image on an iPhone screen can be captured and emailed instantly. Packards has HI Speed WIFI now everywhere now. As we walk the grounds the smart phone/laptop hops from one local network to the next, Works great.
At the PAckard's page I have six cam images tiled that I can see on my phone. I can see much of our area's local weather at a glance on my phone(thanks SebecTec). Look Here:
http://www.modularsound.com/packards.html
halfway down the page.
100 years ago they got the first electric lights in the state here, or so they say. and Now WIFI HI speed.
Next I hear the fish will jump in your boat just for asking. No rod needed.

I want to wish everyone that is either a full timer resident or like myself just a part timer, to have a wonderful and memorable time at the best place on earth, "OUR" Sebec Lake!! in the 2009 season. Happy boating, fishing, relaxing, and spending those forever endless times that are so precious, Sebec the peaceful sancuary. JP@ The Cedars
P.S - Never take this place for granted, Lucky people we are!!
Well.. the Sebec 4 had our weekend. Fishing was at best fair. Our usual hot spots didn't yeild much. Lot of samll Salmon and Togue. We got a couple of keeper Sat. and made for a nice dinner. The highlight of the weekend was trying to outrace a squall From Packards to Greely. It caught up to us 1/4 mile from the landing and hit us with a downpour and 40 mph gusts. Ended in 15 mins. What a ride !
Pelly
We have a converter box and roof top antennae, we can get abc 7 and fox 7.1 and 7.2 We used to get 2,5,7 and 12.We b
Thanks for the report on the antennae. They tell us it is not good to watch TV... I guess with the new fangle digital TV, we can't even get the news....that might also be a blessing is disguise!
We have a roof antenna and been able to get 2,5,7 and 12. Lately just 2 and 5 come in. Purchased the converter box and it will not work. Talked to others around the lake their boxes not working either! Called Daves World----going to Direct TV.
Hey GW, how could you have snapped the rainbow with your Iphone from Packard's when it's obvious the rainbow was in the small lake?
I am chiming in to thank Steve for the view from the Narrows.. Really pretty. Hope to be up that way towards the end of the month. RG. Apopka, Fl.
Hey GW, thanks for keeping us informed of all that is Sebec Lake. I'm going to be up there for 2 weeks starting end of June, never had 2 weeks in a row off and I'm so excited...definatley won't want to return to the real world.
Last year Cinco July-O was a make up event for the unfortunate few who found themselves working on the 4th.
This year there is no such conflict, but I will still keep up the tradition of celebrating on the 5th of July, Cinco July-O!(that way we can still go to other 4th celebration partys the day before)
last year at Cinco July-O we all . . . hang on, what happens at Cinco July-O stays forgotten at Cinco July-O.
-GW
GW Cinco July is my b'day. What is your interest in that day, or did you mean quatro July? Courious, bsbwrbk
Hey Stephen Rainsford:
Nice web image today - I like the new aim and view- Thanks!
HI All:
I snapped the rainbow on my iphone's screen snapshot yesterday too! The WIFI always on on my phone at the camp is too much. Works out at the barn too.
Here is my report from today. I launched my boat. Water is at normal height now. 58-52 degrees. It is warmer in front of the stream at the castle. In front of the back bays it is still COLD 52 degrees! I see no bass spawning yet. We have 2 loons, a nesting pair investigating nest sites up by us now. One is fishing out by the markers today. Perhaps the mate is is on or rebuilding the nest - I will investigate. I saw the eagle on the nest with 2 chicks that pop their heads up and back down like in a "Whack-a-mole" game!
I only caught a small white perch as I trolled for bass. I will use the salmon rods tomorrow and report back then. I stopped by Monson and saw my friends at the Store. They all seem just fine.
Glad I am not commuting in and out of NYC any more!
I need to split some kindling now for the stove, but . . . Now it is happy hour. Tonight I will practice for "cinco july-o"
-GW
PS: The Boulders camp is gone! It is being rebuilt. I snapped pix I will upload to my gallery soon.
In Tims Cove, I only [barely] got channel 5 with my indoor antenna. I was going to get an amplified multi-directional antenna and mount on the roof.
There is a site that showed, based on map, what channels are accessable... It showed 2, 5, 12 on the Bowerbank narrows shore but nothing on the Tims Cove area... Is this expected?
I have a rainbow shot from Saturday night too! nice ending of the day...
fewer black flies... or maybe they weren't as hungry...
After the rain, how's the water level? Thanks!

Anyone have news on current/expected TV reception as we shift to digital? I've always pulled in channels 2, 5, and 7 with a rafter-mounted antenna. I've bought my digital converter, but was wondering if anyone has already converted and how results were. I'm skeptical...

I just sold my aluminum docks for a couple of reasons:
With the lake rising and falling, I needed to re-adjust the height... a floating dock is self-correcting,
My dock was an L. The L section was not that large and took 5 of us to unbolt it and carry it out of the water... the main section was on a wheels making it more managable. Last fall at 51 degrees water temp, it was not a wonderfully enriching experience but was indebted to my wonderful neighbors for their help.
Using a small trailer, I can pluck the floating docks from the water and stack on shore by myself in the future -or- get the gang together to de-dock the lake...

Well the drift sock really worked to slow the troll last weekend. We managed to slow our 75HP down to 1.3 mph with it deployed. That said, we still didn't catch any fish but did get a couple of bumps which was an improvement. A word of advice to Sebec boaters: Make sure your registration and invasive species stickers are up to date. We heard the warden was on the lake last weekend checking stickers although we never did run into him. ~L
Very true about aluminum docks, I'd love one if I could afford it....way expensive..
aluminum docks are light weight last a long time come all ready built. and you dont have to kill a tree to build one. Tim
My ten year old dock is P/T, but the design I used called for styro billits that holds it up out of the water. Of course, the lower "fenders" get wet whenever the water moves (wake, wind, what ever). I was concerned about P/T on the lake, but I am told there is no leaching, and I've spied trout hiding under it. My wife and I are in our 60's, and the shore line is five feet above water level. We lay cedar logs under the bottom planks and haul it out with our F-150. No problem. (She could do it herself but doesn't want me to look useless.)
sorry for the double post PR

I get white cedar cheaper than pressure treated at HD or any big box store. One of the local fellows cuts it to "my" size and delivers so I am saving money by shopping locally, and supporting the local folks.. We all win!
How about a boat-ramp made from pink granite, nice?
White cedar is nice but a bit $$$$ One advantage is it's probably lighter to move around. For the money I'll use the green wood (P.T.)A good book on the topic is this one I bought a copy before starting work on mine.http://www.buy.com/prod/the-dock-manual-designing-building-maintaining/q/loc/106/30476201.html Pressure treated wood is not a danger, http://factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair/CCAwood.htm
All wood is very heavy at the end of the year, at pull out time.

I will build the docks out of white cedar cut locally. Because you seem to have good luck, do you seal the docks with anything. I will not paint the dock, but would consider sealing it before splashing it... may also help for removing dirt and crud.
thanks again!
To the folks asking about the floating dock. I've had the same one for ten years now so I've learned quite a bit about them. First, no two years on Sebec are quite the same. What ever you use to secure your dock you should allow for rising and lowering of water level. Second. develop a good plan for putting it in and taking it out with the least effort. Every thing else depends on your exact location and what you plan to do on your dock. Good luck. Oh, one more thing; although it's seems a nice thing to do, don't feed the ducks from your dock. They'll think it's theirs and make a nice mess of it.
Oh, yeah, you might want to go back to the discussion around May 7 on this guestbook. I posted a link where you can read the actual FERC agreement about water level management on Sebec Lake. It is a lot more complicated than you might think! Gil
Well there certainly has been a lot of discussion about what is normal. I think the number is 322.8' above sea level which I believe is the height of the splashboards. When the lake level gets to the top of the splashboards, it spills over the top. Most years, this will be a pretty normal level but plan on exceptions if we have a lot of heavy rain. The lake can go higher because even with both gates open, there is just no place for the water to go but up. Gil
Many thanks to those folks that worked on getting Tim's Cove graded. The road was remarkably better from the Willimantic marker through Tims Code. The only section that is still a bit rough is the Gilford section... do they grade each year?
many thanks
Gil,
After we gain the 8", is this the normal level of the lake for the summer season? Being our first year, we do not know what "normal" is. This helps us understand what we want to do with building floating docks also.
Thanks
Water level still coming up. Looks like about 8" more to reach the top of the splash boards. One gate still open. Camp is ready, where's the warm weather? Gil

Went fishing in the Allagash area yesterday and I'll have to admit the black flies were brutal! It was a beautiful day and there were lots of moose out in the roads catching the breeze. Nice web for Tims Cove
Tree in the woods fell and pulled the service head andpipe from top of meter off the house and onto the ground... Took phone too and that worked fne until it began to rain...
There are a few other trees in the woods that are leaning and "could" take the street power with it.
I spoke to CMP last week (Thursday) and they said that the trees had taken some street power lines down but are now fixed...

I have been to winnipisaukee(or whatever)
I watched a sunset in august in wolfboro
very pretty
too bad there were tons of big boats pulling large wakes keeping the 2 police boats busy all evening in the cove(200+ boats in a cove the size of south cove - glad police were patrolling) the sunset was nice and it had this neat blue flashing tint from the police boat beacons.
the local person standing next to me looked at it all and said to me, heaven . . . isn't it.
I only thought - yeah right
Folks - Sebec is so so special - we really have a fantastic secret up here in the maine woods.
I am not ready for a McDonalds at Greeleys yet
I do have to take offense at the input on Winnipesaukee. Although there may be large boats, not everyone drives large, loud, boats. Some enjoy the tranquility of the gorgeous enclosed lake also. Have you checked out the water quality? Have you looked at the incredible views from every point on the lake? Have you seen the MANY loon sanctuaries? I'm afraid there will be loud boats and beer drinking fishermen anywhere, you can't judge the majority by the minority. I grew up on Lake Winnipesaukee and it is a beautiful New England Lake. Sebec is also beautiful and holds different qualities. But, as with everything, please don't judge by what you might not have experienced yourself. Enjoy your summer on Sebec, I will too.
I haven't posted in a while.I hope the water level is up soon . Myself and the Sebec 4 are coming up the weekend of the 30th to slay some fish. Any more fishing reports ? As for the loud boat.Bring it Winnipesaukee in NH. They love that stuff down there. A big engine,12 pack of beer , and a chance to chase down some Loons. That's a Winni boater.

Anybody ever use a drift sock or drag buckets to slow the troll? We don't have the benefit of a kicker motor and the 75 hp 4-stroke seems to keep us moving too fast to find the fish. I think I might need to slow the boat down. ~L
Tims Cove had issues with electricity this week. CMP said they spent 17 hours in there yesterday and were on their 7 hour rest so they hope to connect power in the morning to the camp, which was riped off a couple of weeks ago.

Lost the power for 90 minutes in Bowerbank. A wild, windy day. The black flies were blown north a few miles. Not a one to be found along the shore.
They worked on the splash boards today and they are mostly done. Just the northern end of the dam left to do. One gate is closed (finally). Gil

"moderate" is too nice a term for the black flies at my camp. If I had weighed 10 lbs less they'd lugged me off yesterday. Gil, I too stopped by the dam yesterday. I feel the crew is doing what they can. That 3-4 inches of water over the dam is enough to carry a man off the edge. I used to work the generaters at Browns mill years ago. Working on the dam is is not an exact science, but mistakes are rarely forgiven. bsbwrbk

Have not herd from the Dover Dozen lately.Have any of you been fishing on Sebec yet.
Gil, Thanks for the dam reports. My dam opinion: once it filled back up the lake was been quite high the last 2 years. We adjusted the dock legs as high as they could go, but the decking spent quite a bit of time under water. This makes for interesting loading and landing for sure. :-) Here's hoping for a quick refill then maybe a little more water over the dam this year!

Hey 02:48! I can totally relate!!! with all the craziness of this world I think Sebec is the only place left to run to!!! I have to wait till the end of June to be at my camp! I envy you, only 3 weeks to go!!! Enjoy!
Here's the latest on the water level. Still very low. The construction of the splash boards is underway. The iron pins that they place on the top of the dam to hold the boards are all in place. The plywood has been placed on maybe 20% of the dam. Both ends are high and dry but there is still water going over the top in the center of the dam.
I surmise that the rain we had Saturday was enough to bring the water up a little (or at least slow down the level dropping). There was about 3" in the bottom of my boat this afternoon. Both gates are open and if the rain holds off a few days we might be in luck. I'm planning another trip to camp on Thursday so I'll post again Thursday night. Gil

We heard the boats today and honestly, it brought a smile across my face because when we were staying with friends, it was very quiet. We guessed that the gas price last year not only limited people from coming to the lake, but if they got here, there was no boating which made me sad. Glad to hear the boats.

10:46 you know what relaxes me? going 60 in a boat .burning rubber with a fast car . passing a long line of cars on a loud motorcycle. what do you think about kids laughing. singalongs around a camp fire. dont forget those pesky four wheelers and dirt bikes. to much noise for ya.stay home. long hard winter. summer is for fun!!!!!!!!! you didint tell me your name. why should I tell you mine?
Maybe the noise from the older motors is becoming more obvious now that so many have the newer, quieter ones. I'd like to swap my oldie for a four stroke but alas the economy is not cooperating.
I do try to use my chainsaw, a necessary evil, mid-day on week days when fewer people are around.
Now and then we get new people, like the Elvis wannabe across the pond, who have no idea how sound travels. But they soon learn. We hear a few rowdy parties, but compared to other lakes, darn few. I don't recall one ruckus from a jet ski all last summer.
Even mid-summer, it's real quiet all week and reasonable on weekends. Everyone is considerate.
I figure what little noise we do get is pay-back for my youth. Wouldn't be surprised to find there were a few celebrations after our generation graduated and moved on. :)
There is also a floatplane on the lake. Should you vote him off as well? And sometimes people use chainsaws that echo across the lake. And the airforce sometimes buzzes the lake with with an F16. What is noise can be subjective? The fireworks on July 4 keep me awake... :)
I heard that noisy boat alot last summer. I hope someone buys it that lives on a different lake. He does not take other people into consideration when he runs around with the noise. I am sure I am one of many that dislike that boat.

Woops, forgot to sign my name to my post (8:31 AM) Gil
RSD, I wonder if when setting these regulations to protect the fish spawn, the loons and other waterfowl have been overlooked by the nice folks in Augusta that make these regulations? I think I've identified a person at DEP that I can call and chat with about just this issue. I intend to do that and I will pass along anything I learn.
I can also imagine how difficult it is to regulate the water levels that we campowners expect (and demand). Sebec Lake encompases a 327 square mile watershed. All that water has to go thru that relatively small dam.
After reading the dam operators water management plan, I am just a little more tolerant of water fluctuations. Just a little!
I wish everyone who is concerned about the water levels would read it. I'll post it again:

Hi All:
Nice loon cam huh!
I am sure we had no loon chicks last summer due to hi water.
RE: "just let Gil sweet talk the guys at the dam itself!" Yes I like this approach - no red tape needed. leave out the big-lake-icans and the narrow-crats.
I like the lake when it is down a bit. Landings and beaches are bigger and out of the water.
Salmon do spawn first, then the togue. It must be hard to gauge water level vs rainfall vs splashboards in the fall.
Have any of you ever sat on the rocks mid september at the falls and watched the salmon jump? Usually mid afternoon on a sunny day - quite the site! 5-7/minute when they get going. Big ones too.
I'd like to see the togue on the spawn beds. What time of year do they spawn? Sebec bass usually spawn 1st or 2nd week of june - then the sunfish occupy their beds next cycle in early july.
It would be cool to have an underwater "Spawn cam" . . .
hmmm . . .
meanwhile we are all getting hi-speed wifi now, and I can get good 3g coverage on much of the lake and in the north woods.
now if I can only get that big bass out by brown point . . .
ps: we're all good at the ice out guesing - how about Sebec meet and greet in south cove date guess? - what's good for all you folks? Any more ideas - early august - 4th weekend?

If anyone wants some interesting reading about water levels on Sebec Lake you might want to read this document in the Federal Energy Regulatory Comission's eLibrary. It might clear up some of the common misconceptions about the water level requirements at Sebec Lake.

Gil
RSD, yes I remember those days, too. That was before the DEP. The dam now operates under a Maine DEP license that requires the lake to be drawn down twice a year. The first drawdown must be in late October, prior to the fall rains, after most lake salmon migrate up the inlet streams and prior to the time when lake trout lay their eggs in the shallows of Sebec Lake. Once these eggs have been laid, the lake must again be filled to avoid ice damage to the eggs during spawning season. The second drawdown occurs in the late winter so that the lake is at its lowest possible level (down 5.6’) prior to the spring ice out, thaw and run-off. The goal of these bi-modal drawdowns is to store as much flow as possible for recreation by the lakeshore cottage owners and to maximize Sebec project’s power production.
I couldn't read the gauge at the dam tonight because all the numbers under the "normal" water level are slimy and aren't readable, but I bet it is at least 5.6' below normal - something like 316' or 317'.
As much as we all hate to see the water fluctuation, there seems to be a reason for it. I agree with you and G.W. about the loons. I usually see lots of chicks - last summer I didn't see a one!
What's the answer? I sure don't know but I guess nothing is like the good old days. Gil
Normal water level is 322 ft, That has been established already! the trick is holding the Dam ownership accountable.
I went up to camp this afternoon to bail out the boat. As others have said, the lake is VERY low. Both gates in the dam are open and the top of the dam is almost dry. Maybe an inch or so of water going over the top. I also noticed that there was a large pile of new 4x4s and a load of new plywood sitting in the driveway by the gate to the powerhouse. Another pile of 4x4s and a bunch of the iron pins were piled up on the other side of the dam. These weren't there last weekend. I am assuming this is the materials to build the splash boards.
You might remember that I posted last year on May 29th that they were working on Sunday afternoon, Memorial Day weekend, to install the boards and the guys were out on top of the dam with an inch or two of water still going over the top.
If they do in fact get the boards up this weekend, we will be almost 3 weeks ahead of last year! It won't take very long before the lake is back up where we all want it.
Again, I repeat, I don't have ANY connection with the dam nor do I even know anyone who does. Gil
Gil:
I remember when "they" let the water out in the fall of the year, and then the water would be low enough to put the boards on in the early spring. Now they leave the water high and the ice smashes every thing up all winter, only to let it out in the spring. Water foul nest too low, then the water comes up, swamps the nests.
The new dam owners are nice to talk to perhaps? They can't manage water level worth a DAMN!!
I fear the loon population on Sebec will be negatively impacted if this continues!!! it already has actually.
R.S.D.
I agree with 4:35. A call to a fed/state administration concerning the environment could generate problems no one wants to live with. (ie. "The dam will be monitored by federal agents whose wages and other costs such as housing will be defered by a fee imposed upon all waterfront landowners; etc., etc., etc.") Let's not go there. Patience is much cheaper.
Yeah, let's get the EPA and DEP involved. Then it'll require an environmental impact statement every time a gate is opened/closed to return to a normal water level...of course they'll first have to review the 100-year flood data, survey residents within the Sebec drainage basin, etc before they can even determine what "normal" really is. In the meantime maybe they'll seek an injunction to cease any regulation of the water level until the environmental impact statement is completed in, say ten years from now. ...maybe we should just let Gil sweet talk the guys at the dam itself!
GW, thanks for sharing the "live-loon-cam" with us, it's incredible!!! LA in TC

My Dam 2 cents
The loons cant nest if the water goes up and down in June. I am glad they will get the work done quickly. Last year we had little or no loons hatch as the water was up and down all summer. I wish it was more constant. Last year, 2008, I felt the lake was a bit too high for most of the summer and only returned to a good level mid august. Loon nests were swamped.
I hope for another nesting pair near my dock again this season. Pass it on the the good dam folk Gil.
You will LOVE this one!
http://www.mnbound.com/live-loon-cam/
Water level needs to be just right for their egress to the lake and to return to the nest. The nest has to stay dry to keep warm for the hatch. I think it takes about 3-5 weeks or so. I am no expert.

Water level needs to be just right for their egress to the lake and to return to the nest. The nest has to stay dry to keep warm for the hatch. I think it takes about 3-5 weeks or so. I am no expert.

Ampersand Sebec Lake Hydro, LLC bought the dam on 12-4-07. As far a I know they are the present owners. The people I have talked with at the dam have been friendly and helpful, sharing lots of information about the work they were doing. The corporate office (Boston phone number) has not responded to any of my email questions. I understand from various sources they do continue to honor the agreement with the Sebec Lake Assoc. regarding water levels. Someone at the Sebec Lake Assoc. could address that better than I.
I'm guessing that the reason for the low water level right now (based on 60+ years of personal observation) is they are trying to get the water level low enough to get people out on the dam and replace the splash boards (flash boards) that are washed away every year by the spring thaw. A week ago there was 6" or so of water still flowing over the dam. Closing the gates now would only delay the time to get the lake down to where they can work out on top of the dam. It's a Catch-22 situation. The splash boards have to be in place to hold the level up where it is supposed to be all summer. I guess we have to put up with low water in April and early May to get the level up where it belongs for the summer. My thoughts - Yours? Gil
I undestand that there is a new owner of the dam. Are they under a contract or obligation to maintain the level of the lake at certain levels at certain times of the year?

water level way down . impossible to launch a boat with any size at greeleys landing. Tim
Amazing view right now.
Love the new camera direction. Pan right a wee bit more and I can see my camp while sitting in Washington state.
Really like the second view. Vacationed in Maine October, 2005 and went through Dover-Foxcroft a couple of times. Love the area and have looked in on the Sebec Lake webcam ever since.
Go Ponies!
Dale McGrath Olympia, Washington
My springer spaniel swam a lot does that count?
Going up this weekend, anyone been swimming yet?? -Maddock
As for Tim's Cove cell coverage, I'm able to make and receive calls from a particular spot in our camp, as well as most any where around the camp. We have US Cell as a provider, but I think the true technology lies in the phone, you need a Nokia! ~LA in TC

Hey Anglers ! How has the fishing been ? The 'Sebec 4'and myself are coming up the end of the month.Cold beer in hand, trolling for Togue and Salmon, and the best view in Maine !
Pelly
NICE PICTURE, of Boarstone from the narrows! Go Sebec Tech.
R.S.D.
Tim's Cove Rd. report, not bad, was passable this weekend no issues..helps that it had been dry for days, supposed to get rain this week so might make it a bit slick in spots with that wonderful clay mud, but otherwise just the usual few soft spots easy to negotiate and the typical pot holes. Go for it.
We had NO BUGS all weekend, we arrived Sat. and left Mon. afternoon. Water is low, dropped a good 6 inches while we were there. TC187
Hi Bob,
Glad to hear the power company is getting right on it. We did see the truck come to your camp. Regarding cell coverage, I'm assuming same as last year, we were able to make a call to Mass. from a certain spot this weekend...didn't try inside camp as it's never worked before.

Love the new views of the lake!!! Thank you for all your hard work to bring us the beauty of Sebec 24/7!!!
Steve,
On Tim's Cove, was the cell coverage the same as last fall? We switched to verizon because we got coverage on the dock but no coverage in the house... thx
OK - joking aside . . .
Sunset tonight will be great on the new web cam!
Thanks steve for another GREAT view of the lake!
Graet image this morning just wish it were my boat out there fishing.Any fishing reports to share. RS.
GW, You better get up here soon. The salmon will be all gone! Gil
Forgot to thank Steve for teaming up with Mike and sharing his million dollar view of Borestone! I paddled up to the east side of the Narrows from Ram Island on Sunday morning just so I could see this view again. The lake was a mirror - perfectly still until after 9a. The loons followed me around for awhile and seemed to also be enjoying the view. Nice to be back for sure. ~L
CAMS CAMS CAMS
I hate those pesky cams!
They just make me want to come up to camp!
-GW
I HATE THE NEW CAMERA
it sux
I will never view it again!
. . . NOT
Thanks Steve and Mike.....great view at 7:55PM Sunday!!!! Ed & Jodi
WOW! Love the new camera angle with the sunset view of Borestone Mike. That IS a major new development - thanks!
In other exciting news, we're just back from Ram Island Point and Bowerbank has reliable cell service now! The same cell phone went from no bars on Columbus Day to three bars today - air card in the laptop worked too. First time I ever looked at the web cam while looking at the lake in person (I couldn't resist). No more "can you hear me now"? ~L
Steve Rainsford is generously sharing his view of Borestone with us on sebeclake.net. I'm sure we can all appreciate it! Thank you Steve, -Mike
Thanks Steve for the call! The folks from CMP came right out and disconnected "my re-aranged" lines from the pine tree that fell.
Will get the service line and weatherhead repaired next Saturday and hope to have power back in the afternoon.
Then will work with the telephone company after things the power lines are back in place.
Will be up on Saturday early morning.
Nice to know your new neighbors are watchin out for you.
I hope everyone has a good week
Bob
Mike, What's that new mountain? I don't recall seeing it before. :-) Volcanic activity north of Sebec Lake? Gil
Mike, Looks like a brand new picture?? Wassssuup? A new location?? RG Apopka, Fl.
The lake is slowly falling. Looks like about 8"-10" since we put the dock in a week ago. One gate is open and there is now just a little water going over the top of the dam. Hopefully they can get the top of the dam dry and get the splash boards on then get the lake back up to normal summer level BEFORE Memorial day. Gil
Mike,
You are going to get 12 more cameras around the lake and you are looking for volunteers to have the camera point out the front windows... me me me me...
8-)
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the black flies are out in force in the Bangor area as of this afternoon. We usually get them a week or so before Sebec Lake. Gil :-(
A major new development will be taking place - stand by a for few days - Mike
I know everyone is concerned about the whole swine flu epidemic that is going around.
There are a lot of expert opinions out there some more reputable than others. I have found a website that does a nice job making a clinical diagnosis on this possible pandemic:

Thanks for the black fly report...anyone else out there been in tim's cove?...if we do hoard them, we'd be happy to spread the wealth ;)
black fly to bio fuel project?
how is the fishin?
Talked to a friend that live in DoverFoxcroft and he said that the black flies typically do not come out until Memorial Day "just when you are trying to put the garden in"
I've been working outside (Bowerbank shore) for three weeks. Loons, ants, yellow jackets, and grubs abound but no black flies yet. Tim's cove is a beautiful spot, but it seems to hoard the majority of black flies. Thanks T.C. bsbwrbk
No one that has gone in, has been seen again, It is thought that they were carried away by black flies...
8-)
Can someone give a lake black fly report, are they horrible?...or can you work outside without being carried away....?
Had a long hard day. went down to work on camp anyway. someone went by with a loud boat. made my day . I just love loud boats.
Wish i was there with a coooold beer!
Thanks 7:20, aside from the flies we'll love every second of being back at camp.
Telling someone not to go into Tims Cove is like telling a ten yearold not to open presents on Christmas morning.Have a great weekend at Tims Cove.
Telling someone not to go into Tims Cove road is like telling a ten yearold not to open there presents on Christmas morning. Have a great weekend in Tims Cove.
Sorry 10:11 we're headed to camp on Tim's Cove Rd this weekend to open up. If you drive slowly and don't pound into any pot holes, that doesn't damage the road further. Black flies...ugh. They were pretty bad last year, seen worse, but have a feeling they'll be bad this year given the weather. A good wind helps make it tolerable.
I like the upwind view
-GW
Katahadin of course!
From rt 7 from dextah to dovah
Hey people stay out of Tim's Cove until road has a chance to dry out . The more you travel and make ruts the more it is going to take to make road passable for everyone. The road was not made for early travel or giving people the idea that it is time to send in contractors with heavy trucks. Do us all a favor and wait another couple of weeks. Black flies are there so I've been told ..
The winners were John and Lisa on April 22. You will have to scroll down to see who won. I haven't had a chance to update the website. -Mike
Need some help. What is the mountain that you see covered with snow this time of year as you come into Dover from Route 7. It is absolutely beautiful. Thanks,
HEY MIKE, WHO WON ICE OUT?????
Went into Tim's Cove this past weekend. Road is in okay shape. Should be better by this coming weekend. Some soft spots and some snow. The culver on sebec shore rd has been fixed, I think. I passed the guilford truck bringing in some gravel on my way out Monday. The wildlife is returning and looks to be in fine shape.
I would like to plot the temperature also but I don't have so much time lately. I have an idea to buy a Davis weather station or something like that this summer during vacation. Then we can have some nice plots of air and water temperature. -Mike
Hey Mike,
do you have a way of capturing the air and water temp each day or 2x per day. I have never seen the relationship between the water temp + air temp especially when the ice is melting and then ice out...
If there was a specific path to all the videos, I could also pick it off.. (just the engineer in me)
thx Mike
hey mike-
zoom it in on the far hill so I can see the tree buds
or is sebectec not up to the task?
thanks
so jp i see some things never change
so jp i see some things never change
BLACK FLIES are here!!!!!!!!!!!!! :<
Did anyone try going into Tims Cove?
.
Or too little. :-)
Too much information!
Camp Is Offically Open!! And I went for my first swim off the bowerbank yacht club piers, the water was 43 degrees on Saturday. Definitly made some things disappear.JP @ The Cedars
G.W. Great news about the Eagle, This fall I hiked to the base of the "Nest tree" You would not believe the size of the nesting material that had fallen out of that tree! Eagles use big stuff 2+" sticks 1/2 rope plastic jugs, old car fenders... Just kidding about the fender :)
The only reason I would even think to go up to the nest area, is because the wind had blown the old nest down in Oct. The Eagles were gone from that site for the year. This nesting couple has not yet been spooked, but they don't enjoy company while nesting. The nesting cycle is about 20 weeks. All Spring & summer. There are now probably more than just a few nesting locations. I've witnessed "activity" in three areas!

some solar glare on window this morning.
Chesuncook and Moosehead both still have ice, but then again, they both have some amount of open water. Gil
FYI:
"We have seen the Eagle back on her nest - she rebuilt in the same spot so that will be fun this summer. Hopefully we'll see some little ones."
-gw

-gw

All I can say is WOW!!!! We can't wait to open up the camp!!! Ram Island
Mike, nice switch on webcam view...wonder how the big lake is doing...if ice not out now, will be by end of weekend...getting warm...
You have until the 25th to enter the Chesuncook Lake ice-out contest. And there you will really win something :) Go to www.ChesuncookLakeHouse.com and click on the blog. -Mike
Congratulations to John and Lisa For winning the ice out contest. From Scott&Jean Shore Road North
Thank you Mike for providing such fun with your site, I know that it costs you time and money.
Much enjoyment, Thanks so much!!!

Sweet beautiful open water...nice...fishermen grab your poles and start your engines. Please save a few fish for me. I'm hoping to be back on the water and open the camp on 5/2. Can't believe it's FINALLY time! ~L
Congratulations to John D. Major USAF, Lisa F.-Flag Cove Rd. for winning the ice-out contest! If it is not top secret, please share your ice-out-guessing formula with us! Terry
Yesterday's winners get an ice-out DVD. It's a lot of fun to watch the ice go out on the webcam so that's worth something. If official ice-out turns out to be a different day we will announce that one separately. Thanks everyone for participating. -Mike
This happened last year, I jumped the gun on ice-out. We should wait for ice to clear in the big lake and and the 'official' ice-out from.... who? Does somebody know who will call it this year? -Mike
Think I just saw a boat out on the lake.
summers coming
summers coming
For what it's worth. Report from a check at 1:30 PM today says the Big Lake is still solid ice.
Where is Toby falls?
Where is Toby falls?
OK! - Time for my annual iceout Jetski trip down the falls! I will report back as usual with my escapades I hope people are nicer to me this year.
Has any one tried to go up Toby Falls on a jet ski?
AH
Mark, at 11:02 AM,
I think it was a red kayak, and I'm betting you'll see him out there soon.
Yes, good call al. And yes, congratulations to ice-out winners John D. Major USAF, Lisa F.-Flag Cove Rd! -Mike
Yep! that was me. al
Yesterdays 4:59 person who said there may be no ice in the morning was almost correct!
CONGRATULATIONS TO John D. Major USAF, Lisa F.-Flag Cove Rd
Time to wipe the cob webs out of the kayak. I feel like a little kid at Christmas...we have our lake back.
YAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Lets go for a swim.
ICE OUT YIPPPEEEE!!!! Now if we could get someone to run up and down tim's cove with a hair dryer and dry it up for us, we'd be all set....can't wait to see tomorrows daily movie..
Who's up for a swim?
Wow! Here comes summer!!!!
It appears to be revealed - no more ice! -M
In the past a red canoe would appear when the ice was out.
Mark
GOING......GOING....
I'm straining my eyes but there does yet appear to be ice. Time will tell. -M
Mike.. How much is the SebecTec WindowWiper option?
Good site and lot of fun!
someone go wipe their sleeve on the window please...been watching every day..we're so close to ice out !!!! ;)
aaaah!he camera needs a defogger, can't see the lake....
nice time lapse from yesterday
the time lapse needs fender bender sound effects for the ice collisions!
OK - informal iceout revision - I say this friday
I am prolly off by a week from my official guess
any other revisions?
-GW
Tim's cove Rd. report repair work has been scheduled for early May, Careful until then! Big wash out on "The Hill" but navigable.
Grading is schedule, from end to end, South cove Rd. to the other end at Tim's cove Rd. this in addition to small wash out and culvert repairs. If all goes to plan, We should be good to go by mid May. Fingers crossed.
R.S.D.
Just having some fun. I want the ice to go out during the day so we can see it happen. -Mike
Your absolutely correct Mike and I think you can count on several more mornings before it is completely out.
The ice will be there tomorrow morning, mark my words. -Mike
I think we will wake to no ice in the morning. YAHOO!!!
There is a strong breeze coming out of Newell Cove blowing ice flows up the lake toward the beach area. If you watch the jams (white ridges) it will give you an idea of the direction of movement. It doesn't seem to be going toward S. village. When it does, it's all over. bsbwrbk
It looks like a great day to make a Sebec-Slushy! ~Lee
Looks like the easterly wind is moving the ice sheet and
