Im sure the dover dozen have been around the lake this summer would love to see some new photos or here some stories.Did any of you guys get any nice fsh this summer.I have herd some stories that you guys know how to fish.Lets see some photos.
RE: I am still fishing-
Salmon slowing down - still getting on copper mooslooks at all colors - 8, 6, 5, 4, 2, etc . . . I see them staging at the stream head in front of the castle on my fish finder. I expect the salmon to start jumping the falls soon, perhaps in a few days. Togue still biting - lots of 18" to 24" - a neighbor got a 36" one a few weeks ago. I expect to get some good smallmouth fishing in the rest of the month but I haven't figured out yet where the big ones are holed up this summer.
Goin' to the Fly in today in Greenville. I hope the weather holds up.
GW
Any one still fishing?
PR-DoverDozen
I think he retired. :-)
I wish I had as long a vacation as that damn squirrel!
There were four boats entered in the race. One dropped out before the start and one did not complete the course. So it was a two boat race, my boat, an O'day Mariner 19' and an Olin's boat, an O'day 20'. Our boat, Vinland came out ahead I think by about 50 seconds after the handicap is applied.

Hi Mike:
I like the race photos! Glad to see life jackets were worn.
How close was the finnish? Can you caption the photos?
GW
Thanks PR,

Fantastic photo's Mike, China looks amazing. Glade your back in the land of the free and the home of Sebec lake.

So nice to see the lake! It's way too hot here in CA! Happy Labor Day to all!!! JH
Looking forward to my "Frequent" daily dose of your great pictures! Regards, Hope you have a great Labor Day Weekend! Still a little hot down here, but it's the only place I have ever lived that I look forward to Winter ! Rich Gesell Apopka, Florida.
Mike tells me that it may take more than my "point and click" approach to good pictures to fix the camera. :) So I will leave future updates to him!
Kathy
I will be up to the camp Thursday morning and reset the camera so we should have some good pictures again.

Salmon Report:
As you might know, at Packard's this season we have been having a Salmon Contest. Salmon are still biting nice on 6 colors in front of the channel markers in front of the Castle! They seem to be staging for the spawn run up the falls at Earlies. They will start jumping the falls real soon.
I just paid $2 for a glass of water on USAIR - can you believe it? NorthWest still has the best service these days.
Also, come to the Monson General Store Song Circle this friday at 7pm - all welcome.
ps: nice Beijing photos Mike!

Mike, glad you made it home safe and sound. the webcam's been lost without you, kind of pointed in odd directins and out of focus a bit and no date/time stamp at bottom.......o.k. we'll admit it...WE'VE been lost without it/you....you've spoiled us....hope you had a great time overseas!!! KJ tc187
I will post a page of China photos, etc. soon.

Mike how was your trip? Exciting no doubt.
YEA!!!!!!!!!!! It's Back
Mike may comment, he knows his stuff, if you would like to see your camp from home!
I reccomend the IR cameras. They take very good pictures - day or night. And, the flash is invisible (IR). So if you place the camera well, people (and animals) won't know they have been 'shot'. Wouldn't do much good if a thief saw the camera and stole that too!
-Northshore Exile
Which camera systems do folks use and recommend? I have seem some day and IR night cams. I want one watching my dock and boat. I like the idea of swapping the SD card into my digi cam to view the images and USB connectivity. All these features are available for around $100 - more than the cost of spark plug wires I might add, but about the cost of a good salmon rod.
Yes - the Cabellas hunting cams are exactly what we want
I am googleing it now
A number of camps have cameras, that record all activity when the owner is away. Should a problem arise WHAM we have pictures! One possible low cost solution could be a hunting camera that takes and stores a number of still shots of an area any time some one or thing sets it off. Review or delete at a later time.
Cabela's has a bunch of them, prices start at about $50.00 to $500.00 WWW.Cabela's.com Look under Hunting the go to "Trail cameras" All the best!
For those who have had some unfortune recently, due to theft; here is a word for the thief/thieves. And remember this; God is always watching.
The Ten Commandments: #8 "Thou shalt not steal" (King James Version Exodus 20:15)
Where is the pole going? where will the high speed internet be available?
Theft - follow up:
It seems that they were really having engine trouble and "borrowed" the spark plug wires from one of our 6hp boats!
They could have asked! 'da noive of dem bastads
Once the removed wires were replaced, (new available at Tim Merrils!)the motor runs fine again we're happy to report.
It is a shame that this raises suspicion at our beloved Sebec of fellow boaters. If we were asked, we would have loaned them the wires or driven them home 8 miles down the lake - we're friendly folk here. Don't take our stuff.
I don't want to add an IP or motion trap camera on my dock - but guess what . . .
GW - sorry
PS: the Fairpoint truck was here yesterday to see where to put the new pole that will have HI SPEED INTERNET AND CABLE TV!!!
I was just down in Appleton at the Meservey family reunion, and I was staying at my uncle's home in an upstairs room. I woke at midnight, and I looked out the window toward the pasture, and that crescent moon was so pretty; it was that fall orange color that leaves get in the peak of season, and I just lay on my bed gazing at it, and I remember how peaceful I felt I felt in my heart. Thank you to George Williamson for the beautiful picture of the eagles (main page, scroll down). I feel blessed just looking at it. Also, did you all see the crescent moon this morning at the crack of dawn, or were you sleeping :) God Bless America
FYI> Last fri. i seen a sheriff drive down to the lake. I was wondering if someone got broken into. We all try to make sure our camps are secured. Also there;s a girl who seems drunk all the time loses her dog just about every weekend for a month now maybe she checking thing out at people's camps, because if i lost my dog every weekend i sure would tie it up and not have to chase it every weekend, and bother people yelling for her dog. Just be aware for people like her you never know what could happen in the fall when nobody is there.
I would say when investigating unusual activity at odd hours near your property, carry a camera. Be obvious about taking a picture or 2 first, from a safe distance, and then ask questions...that is if they hang around after they see their picture is being taken. If they do, then they may be engaged in an honest activity or genuinely need help. If they leave hastily then you have info and evidence.
Kathy
In today’s climate of idiots we all need to be more observant, next time some one claims to be having trouble or in need of help or lost get as much info as possible reg.# boat and auto and remember as much personal description as you can, it helps in the attempt to arrest these idiots.
Looks like the lake has come up again. One gate is open at the dam and lots of water going down the river. Also looks like work going on at the dam on the generators. FYI I recently had an response from the company managing the dam to an inquiry I made several days before that telling me that they were having difficulties with the generators, had mechanics on site and hoped to have the water levels back to normal soon. Gil
Hi Momo, nice to hear from you. We enjoyed your visit - see ya later. :)
-Mike
Hey! I really enjoyed my stay over there and I wanted to thank you:) By the way your site is very nice. I hope to see you soon Say hello to Jane from me Bye Monica
Ouch. I didn't think that kind of thing happened on Sebec. I've left my boat and motor tied up at the dock with fishing gear, etc. for years with never a problem. Make you think, eh? Gil
FYI: We had two guys in a small silver boat with a small motor that were found at our docks Sunday AM at 6am. Someone came down to see what all the noise was - they were told that they were having motor trouble and were offered phone and coffee. They soon left but first took the plug wires from those folks boat so as not to be chased after. It now seems that they were rowing in to quietly rifle through our boats and steal stuff at 5am sunday am and were prepared to use the guise of motor trouble if caught.

Jan and I climbed Borestone yesterday - beautiful day. It's a great blueberry season this year. We easily collected 1 liter of berries.

RE: A Sebec Lake Sailboat Race will be organized for Labor Day weekend.
What is the course? In the big lake or past the Narrows?
What are the rules?
What kind of music do ya'll play and sing? A poem for you all. Over yonder in Monson, guitars are strumming and songs are sung voices in unison a day well done.
That looks like a great hoe down. Why is it that GW has a mic and MM doesn't? :-) Gil
Wow Mike:
I like the pix on the home page - especially the Barren Ledges shot!
And Jan in the new chair!
GW
Thanks for the link Gil that is great.
Here's another web cam located on Moosehead lake, about 35 miles north of Sebec. Gil
http://www.beavercovecamps.com/weather/
Thanks Gil for the weather update. It is appreciated since the web cam is not working.
I like the new lake level page. Nice job Mike. Well done again!
Water and air temp too - yes, the water is warmer than the air these days.
Goin' back to Monson friday night.
GW
You know what I love about the stars; they are constant; you can go all the way from Florida to Maine, and gaze upon them at night, and there they are, in the same position, the bigger dipper in the northeast and the little dipper, southeast, simply amazing. By the way, if you are looking for the big dipper, it looks like a large kettle with a long handle, if you were to connect the stars, and then the little dipper looks like a fancy number seven, and they sure are pretty. Grace
hi
Since nobody else answered your question, 38 miles to the south of Sebec Lake it is 74 degrees, humid, mostly cloudy but no rain. Gil
What is the weather like up there today?
Update: We should have a webcam picture again by the weekend. The water and air temperture chart is working fine.
-Mike
So sweet it is, to capture nature in its finest, as seen at the break of dawn; two lovely loons on a flat calm lake, swimming at morning's call, with the sun's bright beam as their backdrop. Janylee
webecam update: Might be a few days before we can get a picture again.

Congratulations to Becky & John!! Had a great time @ there wedding. Good times with great people!!John and the gang @ The Cedars.
Since Bill checks this site every day, he'll have to wait until next week for us to pose for the camera. We don't have the boat in yet. Just cleaned it up today, and we found some money to buy gas for it. bsbwrbk

Dear John:
I love your evening photo of the south shore of Bowerbank. It's breathtaking. I look at this website 3 or 4 times a day. Love Maine and miss it very much.
Thanks,
nancy Adams from California
Looks like a great day to be on the lake. I miss the lake. I am stuck here in Kentucky because the wife thinks its to cold in Maine. I look at the site every day and wish I was back home. Maybe even see mom and dad on the boat pass by the camera. Bill S. From Kentucky Ps. It is 94 here today. Could use a cool dip in the lake. ahhhhhhhhh
Over yonder here in Biddeford, Maine, waking to the soft sweet sound of sparrows singing in the trees, butterflies dancing on the milkweed, and the Maine woods as seen from the bedroom window, creates a perfect backdrop to feed one's soul... Janylee&her friend Marissa
I must say . . . Tim Merrills fixed my motor just fine. It purs like a kitten now and runs great!
Thanks Barbara!

The second gate at the dam was closed this afternoon. Gil
One gate at the dam is still open. There is no water going over the splashboards but the lake is right at the top. Looks like no significant change in the level since I checked last Tuesday. Gil
Thanks, Kathy. That's just what it is - a retirement project. Doesn't pay very well, though. Gil
Thank, as also for the wonderful views of Sebec. I find myself looking at this web cam several times a day. Here is a good shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seanettles/2654973245/

By the way, don't wait up for that picture book thing to happen...

Thanks, KJ. Gil
Nice pics Gil... I somehow now find myself inspired to quit my day job and become a free-lance Nature Photo-Journalist. First project, a great coffee- table book with my (and everyone else's) best pictures of Sebec Lake. Title....hhmmm..."A Year at the Lake."
Well....maybe a retirement project.
Kathy
GIL, your pictures are FANTASTIC...thank you I can't wait to get back up to Tim's Cove tonight!!! KJ TC187
Thanks, Susan. I have many more to add. Gil
Gil,
Your pictures are stunningly beautiful. Thank you for sharing them.
Susan
Thanks for posting that photo of The Cedars...what a nice shot..what beauty only in Maine
The squirrel will be well rested after his summer vacation and will resume his antics in September. He is sitting back in his squirrel size lawn chair drinking a squirrel size cool drink right now.
-Mike
When does the squirrel cam guy get back from vacation? I feel bad for the little guys; they must be starving.
Hey, GW, I'm a helmsman of some reknown (just ask Mike) :-) and I have 2 downriggers and 3 12V outlets on my boat. I will volunteer to be the assistant producer if you show me where you are hiding all the big salmon! Gil
Ah, under water camera . . . UNDER WATER CAMERA!
I almost forgot . . . Yes this year I am planning to make more underwater videos - some serious and some more silly.
Also I am planing on an underwater campfire, but the oil well in my backyard has been keeping me busy these days. I think I may have my first barrel sold for around $140 or so.
I need a helmsman and a boat with a 12V cigarette lighter and a downrigger to film underwater. My motah is still waiting for the idle adjustment at the shop.
I am hoping to film Salmon taking the mooselook, more bass, and the Marion again.
GW
Kathy, Great. Will do. Gil
Gil & GW...speaking of fish and other adventures/explorations talked about last weekend, I am definitely interested and game for most excursions. You can get my email address from Mike. (Don't want to post it here) Just shoot me an email anytime since I live "local."
Kathy
PS I'm a member of Penobscot Fly-Fishers and recommend the group. They have some interesting speakers, etc. and meet in Brewer.
Hey GW, can you fix Mike up with an underwater camera so we can all watch the bass swim by his dock? Gil
We have the coolest lake web site.
Thanks Mike!
How cool is the new plot!
GW
Hi Mike,
Great to see both the air and water temperatures. How about wind direction and wind speed? Maybe throw in the Black Fly index for good measure! :-) Gil
Sounds good GW. I just installed new temperature probes and am still setting it up with some new software (using Matlab). You can see we now have water temperature and air temperature. The air probe was sitting in the sun for a while this morning and gave an incorrect reading for a while.
It needs to accumulate some readings over several days and then I can open it up to show more past day readings.
The water temperature is take about 15 feet from the shore and the probe is held down about 18" from the surface. So I guess that would be swimming water temperature.
-Mike
Hey Mike - How bout a 2 week view of temp as we go through the warmest part of summer?
GW
One gate is still open this morning and the water is now about 2" or 3" below the top of the splashboards.
Back home now for a spell but I hope to be back for another of GW's famous campfires before the summer is over. :-) Gil
good news about the boards, the lake level is good right now. thank you.
Hey Gil,
I've also seen a few loons and noticed no chicks. Also saw the eagle swoop down near our dock for a morning meal last Saturday, most impressive sight!
LA in TC
how do mac users upload their great photos
One of the gates is now closed and there is no water going over the splashboards. Watch out for the bullfrogs, Kathy! Gil
Dear friends,
I am in the historic Kittery, Maine area family, and enjoying the soft sweet sound of tiny birds singing to me as the day breaks, and they gather at the feeder for their morning meal; the mother woodpecker takes the seed and feeds her baby, so sweet. Yesterday, I went to church at Saint Marks UMC, the church I grew up in, some folks that I knew from years past where there. And I sat with my friend in the back near a stained glass window. She is the town historian, and is 84. I looked around and I remembered all the time I spent here, and then we began to sing, "Kyrie" and I got a little emotional. Afterwards, I asked the preacher what it meant and he told me "Lord have mercy," and then I understood. Janylee

I was down to the Sebec Dam early Sat afternoon (7/5) and both gates were still open, creating quite a current and a nice flow on the river. By the way, great time Saturday night.

Kathy (Mike's sister)
I haven't been down to the village for several days but the water has dropped down to what I would call a pretty normal level. I pushed the dock back out today.
I've been watching an eagle from around Bucks Cove over by the Castle for the last several days. Majestic bird.
Lots of loons but I havent't yet seen a chick. Anyone else seen one? Gil
Hey, GW, I'll bring my copper Mooselooks with me and come up some day. You can show me where you've got all the salmon hidden. Gil
Hey Gill:
So nice to meet you - thanks for stopping by and being the DB(designated boater). Yes, I want to tour the roads north of Bowerbank. And also fish the Sebec River.
Shoot me an email - get my address from Mike.
Best Regards
GW
I get on this site frequently to get a "lake fix"! It is like having a window from my office in Virginia when I need a break. Thanks, Mike.
Hey Now Gill:
Email mike - I hope you're not busy sat night
GW
Both gates are now open. Gil
Mike, You got it! Good summary!! RBH
RBH, great analysis, thanks!! If I may summarize: 9500 kilowatt-hours = 1" of lake water at nominal lake head height (17'). That's enough to run 95,000 100 watt light bulbs for one hour. Sound right? Lot of potential energy in the lake.
-Mike
Thanks for all the dam info-
FYI: I like this National weather service weather radar site:
http://radar.weather.gov/radar_lite.php?rid=gyx&product=NCR&loop=yes
The animation loads fast on my slow dial-up and the map can be panned to adjacent radars.
Thanks for the info Mike, Gil, and RBH! As I expected - hi water over the dam represents lost revenues. Oh woe . . . I fear our lives will be forever dominated by oil profits and energy efficiency. I think I am going to drill for oil so I can get my profits too. I'll get started right away and report back.
Salmon Report:
we got them at 3 colors yesterday on copper and brass mooselooks
GW
ps: safe weekend all - I'm back late friday night
The energy content (in kilowatt- hours) in the top inch of Sebec Lake as it is used to generate electricity at the Sebec Dam at the “normal” head of 17 feet (5.2 meters) can be estimated as follows:
A) mass of water (in kilograms) = [1000 (kilograms per cubic meter)] * [ 1 (inch)] * [0.0254 (meters per inch)] * [10.27 (sq miles)] * [2.59 x 10 exp 6 (sq meters per sq mile)] = 6.8 x 10 exp 8 (kilograms).
B) potential energy (in joules) of mass of water from A) = [6.8 x 10 exp 8 (kilograms)] * [9.8 (meters per second per second)] * [5.2 (meters)] = 3.4 x 10 exp 10 (joules).
C) energy from B) in kilowatt-hours = [3.4 x 10 exp 10 (joules)] * [2.78 exp {-7} (kilowatt-hours per joule)] = 9500 (kilowatt-hours).
D) The Sebec Dam has two turbines with name plate power rating of 300 and 550 kilowatts. If all the water in the top inch of the lake were allowed to flow through the two turbines it would take it would take 11.2 hours (9500 kilowatt-hours / 850 kilowatts) to lower the lake by the one inch .
It is also noteworthy that any water that passes over the flash boards represents lost revenues for the dam operators (i.e. it is not passing through the turbines). RBH
Yeah, GW, I too would like to see both gates in the dam open. I was down that way about an hour ago and the only one open is the one that powers the larger turbine. Wonder if there might be a mechanical problem causing them to keep the other one closed? The water hasn't come up but I don't think it is going down, either.
Boaters should keep an eye out. Lots of crap floating in the lake.
4-7 colors, eh? Still copper? Maybe I'll have to wet a line. Gil
Sebec friends, here is a weather link that has I think the best radar and radar animation that you can zoom-in on: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=portland%2Cme
-Mike
Sebec Hydro web: http://www.swiftriverhydro.com/sebec%20hydro.htm
-Mike
GW, that's an interesting question: how much power in each inch of lake water. That may be a sneaky integration question because the lowest 1/10" of the "inch" of water is not has high as the upper 1/10" inch of water (it's early in the morning so might not be thinking about that right). For a rough estimate think of the total weight of the water volume - 6000 acres x 1" (convert to the proper units first). Then I think relate it to energy units like foot-pounds and then I think we can get to Watts from there. First one to work the numbers through wins a major award ;)
-Mike
Hey Gil:
Loons will attempt a second nesting clutch in July if the June attempt fails, so the water levels and other factors can affect them. Also large boat wakes, like the inboard/outboard that came by this afternoon and pulled a huge wake "less than 200' from shore" on the way back from Early's Falls at 6:15pm, can swamp nests and kill loon chicks. I figure the loon nest by us got swamped today.
We see the female loon fishing out by the channel markers. The male is on the nest which I haven't spotted yet this year.
Just because we do not put up the "NO WAKE" signs doesn't mean "FLOOR IT!" when you pass on the way to and from the falls. When the water is up like it is now, the loons can't take the stress of boat wakes. A little common sense folks for the common loon helps.
Why are not all the dam gates open now - the lake is so high?
Mike- how much power is stored in each inch of lake water over the normal full level? Is the power company saving the water to process at their own pace?
Salmon: 4-7 colors/still copper
Thanks for keeping the dam reports coming!
GW
Thanks Scott, I'll check on the google ads. I'll have to in an block that one. Lately I'm working on getting another temperature sensor ready to read water temperature. -Mike
Water is still coming up. Pulled the dock in this AM and the water is already lapping over the end. Ship Pond stream is "roaring". You can hear it way over on the other side of Buck's Cove. We saw several pairs of loons but no chicks. I wonder what impact the fluctuating water level has on their nests. Gil
Love this web site and all the information it has about the lake. I look at it every day to keep me grounded and remided of home while I can't be in Maine.
I must say that the large add for "Meet Single Arabs" in bright yellow is a bit distracting and not something I expected to find on this site. Not sure how much business they will generate from our audiance.
Again, love the site and am greatful that it is available to look at for free.

Salmon report - Getting bites now at 4-7 colors on copper mooselooks
GW
Haven't seen any floating but mine and it's tied down pretty good. I'll watch for yours. :-) I pushed it out a little bit too early, I guess. Gil
Gil, have you seen any docks float by yet? We didn't tie ours off three weeks ago and the water level sounds high!!
The water came up about 2" or 3" overnight. One gate still closed. Need to pull the dock in again. Gil
Looks pretty good - like Woodstock. -Mike
Anyone like outdoor concerts of really good tribute bands? If you're looking for entertainment once in a while, you have to make your way to Brownville Junction on the right days/nights. They're set up for camping too. I told them I'd put in a plug to the Sebecians, hope you don't mind the semi-commercial post. (I'm only a devoted fan)

GW - that service map shows a lot of service on Sebec. I'd email them and ask if I were you. My lake area doesn't show any.

Mike, Nice photo. Looks the same storm hung around for 2 years. :-) Gil
Gil, once in a while we get lucky with photo subjects. Several years ago I took a photo (35mm) of a moose just as a car came over the crest of the hill and hit it. My picture shows the moose centered on the rooftop, rolling to the rear. Thankfully the moose got up and walked off the road into the nearby woods, seemingly unharmed. The driver had no idea what happened but had no injuries and no damage to the car. I tried to have the picture enlarged, but too grainy. Right place, right time. Ed
Ok, how about this one:

Saturday dam report. They have finally closed one gate. Looks like about 1" or 2" going over the top of the splash boards. Couldn't see the gauge under the bridge clearly but I think the water must be down to nearly a normal level.
I've been on the lake for most of my 63 years and I have never seen clouds like that. We watched the squall line come down the lake blowing huge clouds of pine pollen off the trees out over the lake. Looked like smoke from a dozen camp fires. As the gusts came toward us across the lake, there were actually whitecaps forming on the south shore and still dead calm on our side. I took about 40 pictures and sent Bill the best one. I really need to buckle down and get my Picasa account working so I can post some of the other ones. Sebec Lake is an amazine place! Gil
Ed, Gil, That day was incredible, sunny for most of the day then these hugh dark clouds rolling over each other low in the sky came from the west. I have never seen cloud formation or a storm roll in like that around here. AMAZING!
PR-DoverDozen
Gil, your cloud formation picture on Bill Larrabee's front page is a wonderful representation of the power in nature..........great picture! You must have been thrilled to witness this. Thanks. Ed
Dear friends,
I am in St. Mary's Georgia (Kings Bay Naval Base is here)and heading north to Maine. It is bright and sunny here today. I left Florida yesterday and travelled through many storms. The car is full of my possessions, some for to keep and some for to give along the way. You see, if we see someone walking in the darkness, we can always add some light on their situation. It may be a kind word, a smile, a slice of bread, an article of clothing, a pillow. There is always someone that has it harder, believe me I know. Oppression is real. There are many homeless people in this nation. I met a little boy recently named Nicholi, and he lives with his parents in a homeless shelter. He is three years old. But he knew how to smile and he knew how to say "God Bless You." And he now owns an angel bear. My position on oppression is that "there is plenty of money out there, it is just in the wrong places."
My family is happy that I am coming up to spend some time with them, after all, my last trip was 2001. I said to dad, "get the fishing poles ready" and he laughed heartily. We are looking forward to a trip to Sebec Lake this summer, just like the "good ole days." Hope to meet some of ya'll fishermen. We will be looking for a place to stay. If someone has a camp for rent? Please write me: oldfashgal@myway.com I was reading an article on seacoastonline.com about the problem of tick's hindering the moose population and I was sharing it with dad and he replied, "that is why moose stay in the water so much." You know, moose are pretty smart aren't they :>) Janylee

Tuesday morning dam report. Both gates open and maybe 6" or so going over the top. By eyeball, the gauge under the bridge looks like about 323.6'. I think the water went down about 1" overnight in Bowerbank. Might have gone down even more in front of GW's camp as he's uphill from me. :-) Gil
Well were all back to our homes and jobs - I for one already miss the lake and company.
The guys and my self had a great time not much to speak of for fish but we did make some memories.

Water temp is about 72 Deg. level high about 1 1/2 ft. above normal, little dirty looking also.
I was in swimming on Saturday, its all good!
Yeah, GW, I'll keep the dam reports coming. I'm at camp for a couple of weeks and I will keep checking. I'm guessing that if the rain would ever stop, the lake will be back to normal fairly quickly. Looks like it went down about 1" in the last 24 hours. The guys running the dam are doing a pretty good job considering the amount of rain we've had. Gil
Hi Water:
I was at Early's Falls last week and never saw that much water over the falls before. It was coming down both sides into the lake. And the black water above the falls was 3ft above normal. If I stood up in the boat I couldnt see over to theWilson River level.
When I am back in hi-speed in a few weeks I will try to reload my gallery and I will include the photos of the hi-water falls.
I moved my dock gangway up to my hi water clip adjustment(havent used that position since 2006) and I hear most rocks and beaches are under water. I launch my boat this am to go fish between storms and I will report back. Mosquitoes are happy I bet.
GW
ps: Gill please keep sending us those DAM reports - I love them.
http://www.premiumchoicebroadband.com/CoverageMap.html
my connection is too slow to see this at Sebec. Somebody check it out and report back please.
GW
Both gates still open, water going over the splashboards. I pulled the dock in again yesterday as it was floating. Just a guess but I'd say it might be 6" higher than normal. Gil
Any update on water level? Is the lake high or at target level?
Why are women good at fishing? Women know: Where the fish are. What bait the fish likes. When the fish are biting. When the fish are not biting. When to reel in the fish. When to throw the fish back. When the fish is a keeper.
Gil, I believe you are correct. We also were told that the GEM had some great salvaged parts. It must have taken a lot of committment to accomplish that feat. What an adventure! Ed
Oh, yes, the GEM. How could I forget! I saw it sitting there on shore last week when I went by. Someone told me that the engine in the GEM was salvaged from the Marion. Truth or fiction? I'll be somebody that reads this will know! Gil
P.S. Gil, we enjoy the info you pass along tremendously......Ed & Jodi
Hi Gil, I think the end of the steam era was a couple of years ago after the ill health and subsequent death of Dave Raymond of Bowerbank. Until he took sick, he made pretty regular trips on his steamboat, the Gem. We used to love hearing it come down the lake later in the evening, after dark...every 7 or 8 seconds the engine would give a quiet hiss and he would coast in for a landing. I think he knew the engine so well that he knew just when to put in the last chunk of wood. We miss those days. Ed & Jodi
We hear that the Dover Dozen have been up to the lake for 4 days or so now but we have not seen there boats on the web cam yet. We were hopping to get a glimpse of the infamous "BIG DAWG" Are you all camera shy?
The "SunnySide" photo has what appears to be a concrete highway, Lots of utility Poles (so it is a populated area), I believe that is a boat in the middle of the photo, far right. By the shadows and his clothes,... I'd say it was taken right at noon in the late summer early fall, ...looking north on Route 1,... maybe Wells?.... or Hampton?... just a guess?
GW has some info on the Marion here: http://www.sebeclake.net/marion.htm -Mike
Sue, the steam boat in your picture looks to be the marion
Ania About the Sunnyside picture - I asked my brother the same thing and he said it is somewhere between Bangor and Boston and we'd have to ask the aunts this summer. I was hoping someone in this group might recognize it before then. I am not sure if the post after yours - referring to Larrabee Road Steadman's Landing was meant to be the answer to the question.
Gil I remember hearing about the Rippling Wave, but it sounds like that was way before my father's time. I will check with the Aunts about the boat as well! I will look for that book. Thanks!

Susan (and others) might find interesting some information from a book "Old Sebec Lake" published in 1997 by Dot Blanchard.
The largest steamer on the lake was the 90' Rippling Wave, launched in 1868. The second largest was the 65' Waban, originally named the Ivy F. Others that operated on Sebec Lake around the turn of the century were the Linwood, the Helen A, originally named the Vivian, the Leola, the Favorite, the Fred and Eddie, and the Frolic. You are probably referring to the 35' Marion, that was built in 1887. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1901 and 10' was added to its length amidships. It was sunk in Bucks Cove in 1932 which probably was the end of the steam age on Sebec Lake. The Anamosa, originally owned by Theodore Wyman was once powered by steam and after being converted to a modern engine was owned by the late Dr. Hap Gerrish and was a familiar sight on the lake for many years. Gil
Glad you enjoyed the pictures. I was thinking I've have to wait until I got to Camp this summer to get a few to post here, but luckily my brother came through with a bunch (and kindly agreed to let me post them).
Does anyone remember the name of the steamboat that was on the lake many, many years ago? I remember my relatives talking about it, but can't remember the name.
Susan
I would like to say thank you to everyone that posts their pictures up, we enjoy the lake through different eyes...Susan your photos as great. :)

Tim's Cove by Janylee McGlinchy
...So young Tim and his new family, a rabbit, two ducks, a loon and a deer were sitting on the dock one day and young Tim was fishing, when all of a sudden an alligator swam toward them and being that the water was level with the dock he just crawled right on up there and had a good rest. Well then, they looked at each other and seemed to have the same thought at the same time. After all, they needed a father for the family. Well, about that time the alligator had a notion that he might just have a home now and so he smiled big and showed those teeth so pretty and that big jaw line. Well, it did not take one bit a time for young Tim and his family to get off of that dock and run all the way back to the cabin in the woods and hide under the bed. And the alligator was just sitting there dumbfounded and he could not understand why it was that they all left so quickly. He thought to himself, "all I did was smile" :>)
No webcam due to the service provider (psouth.net) being down from a storm power outage.
-Mike
The water level is a little high due to the recent rain (thunder showers?) They opened the second gate around noon today so the water should start back down. Looks like maybe 2 or 3 inches going over the splashboards tonight? Gil
Mike,
Best to you in your recovery from shoulder surgery. And I do hope that you will have an abundance of wildlife sightings to brighten your days. Sure do appreciate sebeclake.net that "takes you there" everytime. The family hopes to get up that way this summer. We came every summer for the first two weeks in July from 1961 to 1973. Peaks Kenney State Park was being built during our last summer there. I remember a one way dirt road up to Adams camp (left of Gammons) from Greeley's Landing. Those were the "good ole days" for sure. Maine Country Girl
Well they did make it more than half way across the cove, I was very impressed! That water was very cold.
I am recovering from shoulder surgery and plan to spend most of the summer up at the lake recovering. WOHOO!! ( kind of) Hope to see more of those great sights!
Mike Maddock FR3c
I called my folks today and told dad about the deer sighting. His interest perked and he responded that deer are good swimmers, thought not excellent, like a moose. I learned another important fact, that deer have many hollow hairs that insulate them in the winter and help them to stay afloat when swimming. Maine country girl got her stitches out. If I were a fish, it would appear as though I had a good fight with the hook :>)
Mike,
Do like the new position of the webcam, today, revealing a flourishing green tree, fishing boat, and blue water with forest backdrop. At sunrise, the light in all its brilliance appears to come off the water and form little twinkling stars, so pretty. My only wish, that I was there.
My thermometer that hangs from my dock says it is 62 degrees and that is three feet down. Not real warm yet.
does anyone know the temp of the lake, now that the weather has warmed up? We'll be at camp the 1st of July and was hoping the water will be warmer this July than last. Thanks JH
I have seen deer swim from Granny Cross to Brown point as well

The recent sighting of a deer swimming across Newell Cove inspired me.
"No lake is too wide, too long or too deep where there is love waiting"
by Janylee
Not good swimmers at all! I couldnt imagine any other reason asside being chased down for a meal that it would have taken the plunge. A yet another entertaining sight that Sebec offers.
Cocktail hour too...couldn't have had better timing!
Yes! Mike I have also witnessed a deer swim across Tim's cove about tree years ago. I actually saw the jump in at Garcock brook and swim the length of the cove to Bennett brook. It looked to me as if it had been chased into the water, perhaps another animal.
Good swimmers, are they not, wow!
A very weird sight. About a week ago in Newell Cove my friends and I spotted what seemed to be a beaver swimming in the middle of the lake, at closer glance it turned out to be a deer swimming for a good 10-15 minutes lengthwise across the cove, alone. The water was too cold for me as I imagine it felt the same. This struck us as very strange, I was wondering if anyone had seen anything like this before.
Mike Maddock
WY, thank you so much for your kind words. Gromit was the one we lost, black and white, Skidder was the skier, brown and white. In fact we lost Skidder 10 years ago the very same weekend. Some day we'll have another Springer, or two at the lake. Karla
My grandson and I spent the day at the camp in Bowerbank yesterday and the black flies were hungry. Troublesome but tolerable. When a breeze came up mid-day, they weren't quite so bad. Suggest you bring plenty of bug repellent. I use that stuff with 40% DEET. They don't like it at all. Gil
Dear Sebec Lake friends, can any among you supply a report on how bad the bugs are at present, particularly in and around Bowerbank? Thanks, and happy summer!
Karla and Steve-- So sorry for your loss. Your guy (Skidder?)looked to be a true Sebec Laker. From the photos I'd guess that you gave him a great life and great experiences. You're special for have rescuing him and giving him what you did, too. Deepest sympathy to you, and blue skies for him. WY
Zac Sunderland will sail around the world starting Saturday: http://www.zacsunderland.com/ How's that for a summer vacation.. -Mike
Heard a rumor that a gator is now living in Tims Cove, is this true?
We just lost Our little Black and white Springer spaniel yesterday, a painful loss to us! He's the little guy in Our Photo gallery, under Karla and Steve, if you would like to see him. He was just an old Boy. We rescued him in Feb. 2000, he my have been 15 years old.
We wish him peace.
Watch out "BIG DAWG", don't want you to get "BLIND SIDED". Remember...I will be keeping an EYE out for you! WELCOME BACK TO THE LAKE AND LET THE GAMES BEGIN! RJ

Skin Cancer:
I always avoid the sun between 10 and 2 in June it is so hot and intense
also I use sunscreen the first few days so I do not burn
I guess I should continue to use it afterwords even if I am tan with a nice "base tan"???
I hope all is well country girl!
Dear friends,
When you are out in the sun, use sun protection.
Skin cancer
Because I care about people, I decided to share my story. Recently, I was diagnosed with aggressive squamous cell skin cancer. Yeah, that would be a little spot on my chest that I thought was going to heal, but it never did. On June 4th, I had an it removed, at the urging of Dr. Richard Krathen, who told me "it can spread to your organs and in rare cases he has seen skin cancer kill a person." Well, it didn't take much convincing after that:>) And so, in the same day no less, I was back in there and "under the knife" for what seemed a very long time. I consider myself to be very healthy and I do not drink, smoke or do drugs and am an avid jogger. And I think of myself as a strong person, however, when the epinephrine wore off, I started to feel things like never before. I am wearing a huge bandage that covers my chest (that comes off today, yeah!)and I have stitches under it the size of smelt. I told my dad yesterday, that my chest feels as though a John Deere tractor ran across it and stalled :>) Maine country girl
The water has reached the top of the splash boards and they have opened one gate in the dam. Gil
JP Thank you for the response regarding Bear Pond. We have been on the lake for 6 years now and did not know that. I will be sure to ckeck it out with the kids. Any other cool spots or trails?
Scott
RE:
(is there a trial from Granny Cove to Bear Pond?)
YES ONLY 500 steps - count them! AND a small boat there - bring your life jackets and oars!
The trail is very slippery if wet. Great blue berrys in August 'cause no one picks them except the bears and there are few bears.
It's a quick 5-10 minute walk to secluded Maine woods pond - great for canoe and small mouth bass. Bear pond bass spawn earlier than Sebec lake as it is a smaller warmer body of water. Dish it NOW!
You might see a Moose or black fly.
JP
Bill Larrabee has the photo of the eagle ssitting on a rock below the dam in Sebec Village and says it will be the next one up on the home page of the sebeclakeweather.org web site. :-) Gil
The castle is near the inlet of Wilson Stream and Greelys landing is at the inlet of Bog Brook (to the right of the Tea Room).
Where would the castle be located on the map of Sebec Lake and also Greeley's Landing? It's been a coon's age. Thanks. Any more wildlife activity happening round the lake? Must have been quite a sight Gil, seeing that eagle perched on a rock. God Bless America
yes
There is a trial from Granny Cove to Bear Pond?
Granny Cross:
The way I hear it in the late 1800s Granny Cross used to summer on Sebec in the cove gathering roots and mushrooms and the like for remedies. Trappers gum pickers loggers would stop by to see her for a pick me up or whatever. She had a root cellar there and the remains of it can still be seen. It is a little off to the left of the Bear Pond trail head on Sebec as you land deep in the cove. What remains today of the root cellar is a small conical shaped depression about 4-6 ft deep covered and filled in with leaves and junk. I think her camp was a tent.
GW
Sounds good to me!!
For when the fishing's slow and a birthday message...

When I was a kid we watched "The Wizard of Oz" movie many times. My sister would always run out of the room when the wicked witch would come on scene. How many of you out there knew that the scarecrow, the tin man and the lion were Dorothy's relatives at the beginning of the movie? I will be the first to admit, I didn't. And that is about as naive as it gets :>)
Happy Birthday to a dear friend.
What the... Huh?
Once upon a time there was a granny and she lived over yonder near Pine Mt in a log cabin. She had in mind to head over yonder to Bear Pond to see if she could catch a glimpse of a bear, cause she had always wanted to see one. So, she started out on her journey and soon met up with a hedgehog on Hedgehog Mt and he told her to keep on trucking cause she was almost there, but about this time she began to tire out, so she laid down to rest, and it a good thing that she did, cause the bear thought she was asleep, so he went right on by, so then granny awoke and came upon Bucks Cove and that is where an eight point buck come out of the woods and chased her all the way back to what is known today as Granny's Cross Cove.
Does any one know about Granny Cross mentioned on the yellow map?

copper mooselook is the way to go . . .
GW
ps: try the baby mooselook - it's tiny
Thanks Gil, nice to know!
Looks like about another 6" to 8" before the water level reaches the top of the splash boards. Both gates are still closed. I caught several small salmon this morning and one that went 16". All right on top with copper-colored Mooselooks. They didn't seem interested in a smelt.
I watched and got some nice photos of a large eagle on a rock, just below the dam. Gil
That wss a nice reply to a nice story??
Some people are just out for the shock value!
The lake she is a cummin up!! JP
It may be because there are fish stories in the Bible but no rabbit hunting stories. :) I like Janylee's story.
After Tim violently yanks the fish from it's tranquil underwater home with a sharp steel hook in it's mouth, then eviscerates it and drops them into hot oil, will the Deer, Loon, two ducks and the rabbit feel like staying at the foot of the bed?
... Do the animals have faith? The next morning could just as well yield a bright shiny shotgun against the lone pine tree.
It would appear, Tim only treats the animals he decides are cute with compassion?
Just a thought...
Tim's Cove
Once upon a time there lived a young boy named Tim. He lived all alone in an old rundown shack in the woods near Sebec Lake. Tim loved to fish. But even so, he had not come out of the shack in a very long time. Tim was sad because one day he woke up and found his family gone. When he went to bed that night, he wept bitterly. His sobs were heard throughout the forest, to all the creatures that lived there. The next day, when Tim woke, he heard a sweet sound coming from outside, and so he leaped out of bed and looked out the window. There before his very eyes were a rabbit, two ducks, a loon and a deer. The deer, who appeared to be the leader of them said to Tim, "Could we come and live with you? We lost our home in the woods to a campfire." Tim smiled at the thought of it and shyly said, "If you do not mind being with a little boy and sleeping on the floor at the foot of my bed." It seemed as all the animals grinned in unison. Tim was happy again and so were the animals. As he lay on his bed that night looking out the window, he saw one luminous star twinkling in the east, and he gave thanks for his new family, and then he fell into a deep sleep. Upon awakening, he lay there looking at the crescent moon and remembered that for a very long time there had been one other thing that he longed for. He whispered, "I wonder if I could ask for a fishing pole? And if I had one, I could walk to Sebec Lake and fish on the shore all the day long with the rabbit, the two ducks, the loon and the deer by my side." For Tim was the happiest when he was fishing. So, he said his prayers and went to sleep. When he woke up the next morning, he noticed that there was a bright light shining in through the bedroom window and it came to rest at the foot of the bed, where all the animals were asleep on the floor. And in that moment, he felt in his heart like he did when they came to live with him, and he knew that his wish had been heard. So he jumped up and looked out the window, and there resting up against the lone pine tree was a bright and shiny new fishing pole. Time once again gave thanks. The next day, Tim fished on the shore with the rabbit, the two ducks, the loon and the deer alongside him. And his face glowed in the radiance of an angel because Tim now had faith. The end. Hey G.W. last week end Sun. 58 deg.
I can tell you the Tea House map is a print where someone later pencil sketched on it to outline the lake and roads. I don't have any more information on it. Did you notice the "Sunken Island" detail on the north side of the small lake? -Mike

bsbwbk..... the "old yellow map" is on the home page... simply scroll down.
it appears to me this may be a tracing of another map, possibly created by a patron of the tea house.? Mike, any idea of a date on this map?
... if your interested in looking up old maps and such,... I would suggest a trip to the Piscataquis County Court House (right there in Dover)and visit the Registry of Deeds and / or the County Commissioners office, both have archives full of old maps, deeds and plans,.... usually the workers are able to help you find your way to get started with the indexs and layout of the files....
it's a good way to spend a rainy afternoon... and usually you can have copies made of your findings..
also a good source is the local historical society..

I can remember going to the Tea room once as a very young kid. Late 1940s or early 50s.
Also remember eating at what is now the marina. Think it was owned by Ronald (Roland?) Steeves. Does anyone have info on that. Maybe his wife was a sister to Hugh and Earl Cole?
Thanks
Mike, I love the old yellow map of the lake "Clark's" Tea room. Nice!
Thanks for the help G.W. I guess you have to be a local or a flatlander with a camp to be included here.

yes - we are lanching boats here but not large ones like pontoon boats etc . . .
are small fishing boats are good to go. I just got my boat credentialed for the season with the right stickahs, and as I completed my work, the wind had come up so much and the temperature dropped below 50 that I decided I didn't want to fish that badly in my boat.
GW, can you launch a boat at Packard's? -Mike
Tues. May 27, 05:57 I asked Dot Blanchard this same Question, she wrote the book "Old Sebec Lake" and She did not know, and never asked how Tim's cove got it's name. She said Aden Green may have known, however he's passed on. Perhaps lost forever, the true origin of Tim's cove'S name. :(

First of all 'Thanks for Nothing' that no one answered my post as to wether launching at Packard's was possible. A 'I don't know ' would have been friendly. But anyways we slammed Tougue all last weekend ! 2 boat with 4 guys caught there limit and more every day. Salmon were all small. But the Tougue were 22" to 26". I would tell where, what we trolled, and how deep. But. One hand washes the other. Pelly

Yo!! SH, As I was saying all things considered, your almost paying the same price @ the lake as you are in town. Don't take it personal, but take your frustrations out on someone else.JP
Hello from Rocky Cove. Was just up to camp over Memorial Day Weekend. Quite a few fishermen out over the weekend, only one I talked to had success, or should I say, more success than I. The water is quite low and too cold for the average person to swim. See you in 2 weeks.
How come there are more people driving SUV's than volkswagens? They must cost an arm and a leg to fill up. Has anyone thought of this in terms of greed? If you own a big vehicle and are wining about the price of gas; I cannot feel sorry for you, because some people have no car and are out in the heat all day watching you drive by in your big vehicle that you bought for yourself, while they go hungry.
There's a link to a gas price chart at the Global Warming discussion:
http://www.sebeclake.net/globalWarming.htm
When considering #2 heating fuel will be near $5 this coming winter, I cannot with straight face put my 175 hp Searay into the lake. Some of our Maine seniors will be looking at freezing. bsbwrbk
There may be some "greed factor" taking place but remember there is also a supply and demand factor. New oil discovery is flat but consumption is up worldwide. All the oil in Anwar is much less than a years supply for the US. Nobody complained that prices were flat from about 1990 to 2000. The blame is on "us" and our representitives. We had plenty of warning beginning in 1973. Be happy oil is available and there are no lines. Once supply is so short that we can't fill up at any price that will be really bad.
JP, not bad considering...?.... Considering WHAT?
We are getting absolutely screwed with the price of petroleum products!.... and you say not bad considering.... you must work for, or have stock in, the companies making all the $$$$.
Every person that states the price of energy is "not bad".... even if they preface it by saying "considering"... is part of the problem..... we should not stand for this... it's time for a "tea Party"... or "revolution"....or "something".... anything but complacency...
JP... nothing personal here... just had to get this off my chest...and make a statement,... Hope you understand..... SH
Pretty quiet up to sebec. Whats up with no fuel @ greeleys. I was the first fuel customer @ Norms @ 4.30 a gallon, not bad considering.JP@The Cedars

Fishing wisdom,
Watch out for fish that are pretending to be interested in the bait, but really have no intention in taking it, they would just rather play with the line.
Fishermen are devoted to their wives like they are fishing, because they always come home to the right dock.
Better a pond where there is love, than fish where there is wandering.
Fishing questions
If you have two lines running, and you catch one nice fish, and that's all you want, but you get a nibble on the other line, do you throw the one you have back, to go for the other?
Do fish stay in their schools, or do they wander?
Who wants a tuna
The lilacs gracing the bird feeder are very pretty and my eyes see them in the shape of a heart, sweet.
It won't make you feel any better, but that town increased the taxes on our inland piece of property (just woods, no buildings, and nowhere near any body of water) by 64.5% last year.
Well, what do you want to bet they'll just increase our lakefront property taxes to get the money back...taxation without representation.....*sigh*

Blackfly today is likely to be fairly quiet, but the summer people will start trickling in tomorrow which will enable you to feel a lot more fed and positive than you've felt in quite a while. Nothing much is going to get to you, especially that Avon Skin-so-Soft. Even that annoying guy with the Deepwoods Off won't hold you back. And so what if he's using DEET? You're not in a hurry and can find a spot just above the socks or behind an ear to feed. You're gaining a healthy meal and can spread the joy of your existence...for a few more weeks.

Today is likely to be very fairly quiet, so it's a good day to rent cars and go fishing which will enable you to feel a lot more grounded and positive than you've felt in quite a while. Nothing much is going to get to you. Even that annoying game warden won't be quite so annoying to you today. And so what if traffic's bad on the Turnpike? You have a rental car! Use the shoulder. Cross the median! If you're not in any hurry, then stop at mile 24 rest stop or LL Beans in Freeport. You are gaining a healthy perspective on why beer matters in life.

ah . . . narrower!
thanks mike!
Come on Guy ! Have pity. My friends and I , the Sebec 4, having been looking forward to this weekend fishing trip since Feb. We haven't missed a spring fishing at Sebec in 17 years. We have a 19 ft. deep-V and a 16 ft. aluminium Starcraft. We usally put in up at Pachards and sometime Greely's. Are we going to have trouble due to low water ? If so where can we launch ? Pelly
E&P, Bring extra. You DO NOT want to run out of fly spray this weekend! A spare head net or two would be nice, too. G
The rips below the dam? Probably. When I was there Sunday there was still a little flow. Of course if they close the second gate the river could dry up very quickly. Gil
Gil, Can I float a canoe through the Rips?.... and maybe catch a salmon?
Gil, Thanks for the warning! If I run out will you toss some across the pond? :) E&P
T.C.187, Yep,I think jacks and blocking are supposed to be written in the deed when you buy a camp in Maine. E&P
E&P: Bring plenty of fly spray. :-) Gil
Weather looking pretty good for the weekend. -M
Can boats still be put in at Pachard's Pelly
E&P, I did all that last weekend, it's good to know I'm not alone in all this.
I love, "jacking the camp to open windows"!!! You too?!
T.C. 187
We plan to go this weekend. Yea!
Probably no time to fish. Boo!
Check in with our lake friends Yea!
Jack the camp enough to open windows. Boo!
First 2008 lunch on the porch Yea!
Wrestle with the water pump Boo!
Put in the kayaks Yea!
Drive to D-F for pump parts Boo!
Sleep at the lake. Yea!!!!!!
Drive to D-F for more pump parts Boo!
Breakfast at the Lake. Yea!
Swear at the plumbing and crawl back under the camp, promising (again)to rebuild the system this year so next year it will be easy. Boo!
Hey! doesn't matter - we'll be at the lake! YEA!!!!
E&P
OK- time to check in - who's going up to camp this holiday weekend?
GW(I am! - save me a salmon)
If anyone is cruising the shore line waive to Moe AKA the Godfather and his family this Holiday weekend.
Wet lures and tight line all!....PR-DoverDozen
The water is low and the flies are out! Got a chance to level up the docks and get the water running this weekend. We'll be back there next Monday, cant wait!
-Maddock
Ed and Jodi, You're very welcome. Gil
Gil, thanks so much for the observations and updates. We certainly appreciate you taking the time to keep us up-to-date with what is/isn't happening. Ed & Jodi
FYI, the man with some answers to some of the questions regarding splash boards, water levels etc... would be Mr. Gary Robinson of Milo.... not sure about this year, but last year he was in charge of the Sebec and a few other dams in the area.
He can easily be found each morning in the coffee shop in Milo....
Mike Technical question/request:
Can you please make the Guestbook/chat window a little narrower?
I never run my browser window max so it is hard to grab the scrollbar for the blog. Put the google ads to the right?
or just never mind, cause it's also just fine the way is is . . .
. . . too much time on hand
JP, I'm no expert, but I believe they have to lower the lake enough to make it safe to work on the top of the dam when putting the splash boards on. Can't leave them on year round - the ice would destroy them in the Spring.
It's up to Mother Nature to bring the water level back up. The lake is fed by a large area. One or two rains and you'll have sufficient water.
We have a floating dock, and although it creaks, bobs and weaves, it's always the right height above water.
Taking care of boats and docks is a character building exercise. Mother Nature and the splash boards are part of the test. :)
Enjoy your season!
Beware Sebec Lake Boats!!!!! Lake levels are extremely low. Can't put boats in @ Greeleys landing.Friends of mine could not put there 18' boat in the water over there, they had to go to the bowerbank landing to put in. I put my 17' boat in the water over @ greeleys saturday morning, and by the afternoon I rubbed on the bottom half of the way out.I know the boards are in but with no rain,I don't know if the lake will recover for memorial day weekend. Why do we let this happen,it's pretty bad when you can't even bring your boat close to your dock.If you don't have a mooring, you might be in trouble.Hope everyone has a great 2008 summer season at a place we all love so much.JP@BBYC@The Cedars

Well, that didn't take long. The splash boards are up at the dam and one gate is closed. Looks like the water level is starting back up. Also looks like they placed a layer of ice and water shield on the lake side of the splash boards to hold the leaks down. I've never seen that before. We may have water in the lake by next weekend after all. Gil
Speaking of Taxes -
I hear the folk in Willimantic have been "given" the Early's bridge by the State o' Maine. I hear it only needs $500,000 worth of roadbed repair.
?
TSgt Cole Thank you for your service and come home safe.
PR-DoverDozen
Amen to the tax break. They have really made a mess. Gil
TSgt Cole, Great to hear from Iraq and thank you for your service. -Mike
Great to be able to see the lake via web-cam since I won't be able to be there all summer. TSgt Cole, Camp Bucca Iraq
HI Marlborough:
Your dad used to cus them beavers. I remember they chewed his trees on the lawn by the his dock. I was saddened to hear the report of the beavers in shippond and the birch trees. I hope you can "solve" this years problem. They have had quite a lodge there for years.
Good Luck - GW
For those who get to Ship Pond Stream and view the beaver work please know that beaver are nothing but flat tailed aquatic rats and very destructive. The trees and property that they are damaging belong to my wife and I. If I cut those trees and dropped them in the lake I guess I would be locked up. If I removed the beaver by "extreme prejudice" I would also be locked up. Never mind the lobster license plate, lets go for an image of the flat tailed aquatic rat with chew marks on the edges or the plate. Enjoy the spring and please view the work of the busy beaver.I should qualify for some sort of tax reduction due to beaver damage.
Marlborough
For those who might be out on the lake this weekend, check out the beaver activity in the mouth of Ship Pond Stream. They have some huge birch trees down in the water and along the banks and at least a half dozen others underway. These are large trees. Some are missing the bark and some have been chewed half-way through.
In spite of the low water in the lake, the stream is full and the white water is pretty impressive. Gil
Yeah, Gil--sure appreciate your reports. It's nice to have somebody with eyes-on for those of us several hours away. Can't thank you enough, my friend. WY
Thanks for the report Gil!
A day spent on Sebec Lake without fish beats working any day. No sympathy needed. Gil :-)
Gil, are we supposed to feel sorry for you? At least you were fishing!!!
Lots of information today.
For those of you asking about the splash boards, the north end of the dam is now dry but it looks like still 5" or 6" going over the top of the dam in the center. Both gates are still wide open. Given the flow over the top of the dam right now, I doubt that anyone could stand upright on the dam and work on the boards quite yet. As we all know, they have to draw the water down so they can get out on the dam and build the splash boards. There is a large pile of new boards and lumber next to the entrance to the power house that wasn't there Sunday which makes me think someone is getting ready to build some splash boards. It looks like the lake has dropped over a foot since we put the dock in Saturday. That means if no more rain the level should drop by the weekend so the top of the dam is dry. By the way, that is only a guess on my part. I don't have anything to do with the operation of the dam.
Fire Road 9 has been repaired. Looks like many loads of gravel. Looks great.
Oh, yes, a fishing report. I fished all day. The Narrows, the mouth of Ship Pond Stream, the Salmon pool and the entire north shore from the Narrows up to Bucks Cove. Smelts, streamers and lures. Deep and on top. Fast and slow. Zilch. I wondered why I was the only one fishing on this beautiful day. Now I know why. :-(
Good to know the black flies all survived the winter.
Gil
The lilacs in the background of the squirrel pictures are very pretty. And I noticed that the squirrel has been nibbling on the bird feeder a tad.
Again this year, good luck commissioning boats for the holiday weekend! Three weeks ago it was 5ft. above normal, now look at it!
The water level looks a bit low, Any word about the splash boards?
PR
Hey Boys you know the deal even though you might not be there physically you might have had a good time anyway.
When does everyone want to have sit down and cold one (two)?
PR-DoverDozen
Long shot request for Sebec boaters - Tim Merrill told me last year someone had a 12 or 14 foot Grumman fishing boat on Sebec exactly like mine. He was working on mine at the time. Unfortunately this winter the Asplundh tree folks ran over it in the snow and its future is probably going to be one of containing beer since its floating days are over. If the fellow with the Grumman boat no longer wants his, I should get a fair settlement from Asplundh and I'd love to have the same boat. P.S. Don't leave anything in a Bangor Hydro R.O.W. that could get run over by their 6 wheel machine... Schoodic Lake George
Hey PR.we need to have a meeting soon to set some rules for our upcoming fishing derby. And get a head count. RS.
Hey PR,... are you going to camp this weekend.... I might need someone to blame my actions on....heheheh, I'm thinking of visiting and feeding a few black flies....
Has Bennett Pond bridge and Salamone Stream bridge been repaired or do we need a 4x4 to get through?
Yes you can
Does anyone know if you can get to the end of Tim's Cove Road?
Ha, That movie is funny! Link: http://picasaweb.google.com/PRDoverDozen/PRDoverDozen/photo#5192033309091168674

To the folks operating the dam,can you get the spash boards installed while the lake is down? You know we'll get a wet spell, always do. Grateful for any assistance you can provide to we fellow users of the lake.
GW
I wasn't sure that movie was going to work in the photo gallery.
PR-DoverDozen
Hey Dover Dozen - I love the frozen bait pail movie in your gallery.
-GW
See if the steps I put on the photo gallery page can do it for you. Hope it can give you enough to get it going.
-Mike
Would someone mind giving a "step by step" on how to set up a google "Picasso" album for the sole purpose of putting them in Sebec's photo gallery? Yessem, that would be for those of us whose talents lie elsewhere. Shore do 'preciate.
LOL.... ayuh!.... there's a few black flies around.... heheheheheheheh
Bugs Bugs, can anyone give a black fly report from this past weekend????
I think there is a depth error off green point on the mentioned maps
I think the 30 ft depth to the south of green point should read 80 feet
There is no sandbar there as the map states
check it out
Which do most prefer?
Quisp or Quake?
Terry, see great maps! I have one of the ones described below, not as good. Place mats! what a nice idea.
Enjoy you summer on the lake.
Any fishing reports yet ? Pelly
Terry F. I think you can still buy laminated Sebec Lake map place mats in the D-F stores for 3 or 4 bucks each. May not be quite as detailed, but they have the lake depths on them and look very similar to the map shown in the posted web site. We keep one on our boat to show to guests when we take them out for a cruise.
Re: the post on May 3rd about the Sebec maps. I ordered some of the laminated maps for camp place mats (go ahead ~ call me Martha)and they are wonderful. I guess I should call them map-mats? Got a folding one for the boat that's pretty cool too. Terry F.
Mom and Dad are on their way back to Maine from Florida. Hope to have some good "old" pictures to post in the gallery soon, along with the others. I graduated from FAU on May 2, 2008 with a BA in English. Being that I was born in Oct 1957, that makes me fifty, and it just so happens that this meant that I had to stand up and get acknowledged, like I am old or something :>) So, I looked at my younger classmates, and grinned, while claiming I was "only fifty" and they laughed, then I slowly rose out of my seat and stood proud. The sunrise images feed my soul. I do hope all who live on Sebec Lake appreciate what they have, cause nature in all its brilliance, is a free gift. Janylee
There are definitly a few moose around. I don't have any idea if there is an abundance or not.... I will say I see ALOT of sign, every visit.
.... in fact, on the wheeler trip I took to the tressle last July, I almost collided with a BIG Bull... he sprang from the woods and about ran me over... SH
Hey, S.H., not to beat this Bowerbank woods thing to death, BUT I would appear the Moose population in this mill pond/brook location is quite reasonable compared to say some of the other local areas like Willimantic or Sebec. It would appear it's a little Moose community.
Hello,
I really enjoy sebeclake.net. I have never been to Sebec Lake.
Your webcam images are beautiful and the "ice out" movie was great. I often check in at lunch to enjoy the view.
Thanks for making spring 2008 a little better.
re GPS, this is a lot of fun - wire a GPS into the USB/serial port of your laptop and run National Geographic TOPO (www.topo.com) with the 1:24000 maps. Great to see the top down view on a topo map as you drive the back roads. -Mike
LOL,... there is a lot of woods up there... but it seems to get smaller every year.... more roads, more people,... & don't be scared...leave the gps home.. you'll only be lost for a little while....heheheheh
Thanks! Sh, it's easy to feel like you took the wrong turn up thayah, guess I'll take the the new fangled G.P.S. next time... Awful Lottah woods, Huh?
Not the best place for me to type SH was it?
The cabin on Mill Brook Pond belongs to David Preble. We are close friends so I visit often. The road you speak of is the same... and yes it has been hard going for quite some time...(that used to be the best way into the pond - 20 years ago) I used it a few times last hunting season when we had such rainy weather.... it scratches the paint some... but is passable with a regular 4x4... if you go slow... It merges with the newest road that begins at Bear Brook,.. (that used to go to and through the old farms), now goes right by Randy Knowles cabin,...then comes out on the new road they call "Grapevine South"... go left and you can return to the "Bowerbank Road"... continue and you can go to Barnard and beyond..... SH
Reply to 9:47 below, I was not on a four wheeler, 1983 Chevy truck with 10" of lift 38" tires, always loved that truck! It was still hard goin, from your photos I thought you might own that little cabin next to the outlet. I would always go "Muddin" when at the Gerrish Compound.
FROM: Thursday May 01, 2008 06:04 PM Nice gallery "sh", love the moose photos. "Thank You, I enjoy photography as a hobby"... and if you click on "My public photos" while in any of the photo galleries, you will see many more photos of other areas, places and people"
I remember four wheeling up to Mill brook pond on an old over grown and very rocky trail/road. I drove in from the Old Bowerbank dump. You obviously spend time in thayah.
"You can still travel that road, there are still a few trail signs up...."
After the logging operations a few years ago, I could never find the connection again
"I'm not sure of the disposition of the landowners regarding using the trails and roads as Four Wheeler trails?.... I use the roads occasionally in the summer, more in the Fall.... I have not been reprimanded by any owners or Law Enforcement yet.
Looks like the water level this afternoon is 322' 10" at the bridge. Gil
Yes, Gil has pictures. :-) Now to find the time to upload them again. I keep saying..."next rainy day". I guess I better find time, rain or no rain!
tc417, had to clean up multiple entries. Thanks for reposting. -Mike
Checkin in on the new galleries, You have some really nice shots Mike. Thanks again for setting it all up!
I do think all the Galleries are better this time around, the photos are sequenced better and more of them. The slide show is the way to go!
This "Picasa" is more complicated to use at first and you can't add as you go, a nice feature, but it works.
Come on now you Sebec lakers, show us what
